2011 Top speed guesses

OK, folks, what do you think the top speeds will be for the 2011, both V6 and GT? It's not just a question of physics, as Ford may very well electronically limit the top speed. Place your bets.

155 for the GT is my guess, and probably 110-120 for the V6. Depends on what speed rating tires they use too I guess.

155-160 sounds about right.

155 seems to be the magic number automakers are using

I'm sure both the V6 and GT could hit 155. It's all about the tire Ford puts on them.

The V6 and the V8 Mustang will easily go more than 155mph but they will have a speed limiter on them that will limit them to 154-155mph as do most European car makes as well. A E9X M3 is limited to 155mph but will hit almost 180mph if ungoverened. My 2008 BMW 328i with sport package is limited to 155mph and it only has 230hp.

It will be electronically limited to 95 mph like my F150.

My guess is the GT and v6 will be limited to 155 and 115 respectively. Now actual top speed is another thing.

I was thinking about 150-155 for the GT. For the V6 I would hope that they would let it go to 140+. It would be very interesting to see someone do some testing after disabling the electronic limiter.

130 for the V6.

130 or 155 for the GT, depending on the rubber.

My Gmc truck will run about 97 or so before the fuel shuts off. Wanna race?

As many have said, it'll come down to tire speed ratings.

Expect the standard tire V6's to be limited to 115-118 mph, maybe even the V6's with better rubber so the ECU calibrations are all the same.

All the GT's get higher speed ratings for tires, and 151-155 mph has been the electronic limit on all late model Mustang performance models.

My supercharged '07 GT redlines at 175 mph (6400 rpm's) in overdrive with 4.10 gears and the stock tires, so gearing will definitely play a factor in top speeds. Of course, lesser gearing (3.15's or 3.55's) may not generate enough twist to overcome aerodynamics to hit redline in a stock '11 GT.

155 for both if they are limited, that is the standard today. If they are not limited, then the top would be different, someone do the math based on the gears but I would guess 165, and 185 for v6 and GT respectively. My old Fox convertible could go 150+ and the V6 is more aerodynamic and powerful.

They will be drag as well as power limited before they hit the "redline in 6th" speed. The 505HP 3100 lb Z06 can't even hit redline in top gear stock. 412HP and the Mustangs aero isn't enough to reach 185.

Well, so far, the 155MPH guess seems to be the top one. Developing...

/just takin' the title all literal-like...

Un-governed I think the V6 could hit about 154 and the V8 about 170

I would not expect Ford to raise the limiter from that of the 2010.

Car & Driver TEST RESULTS:
Zero to 60 mph: 5.1 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 12.5 sec
Zero to 120 mph: 18.2 sec
Street start, 5–60 mph: 5.6 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 13.7 sec @ 104 mph
Top speed (governor limited, mfr's claim): 149 mph

I think we all know what the limiter will be set at. That said, the more interesting discussion is top speed "de-limited".

If the 2000R had a top speed of 175 with 385HP. The only signifigant factors in top speed are aero, HP and gearing. Given this, the signifigantly more powerful '11 GT with it's improved aero will hit at least 180mph.

Please look at the aerodynamic treatment of the Cobra R versus a factory lifted Mustang like the 2011 will be as well. The 2011 is a STREET car and doesn't have the aerodynamics of the Cobra R.

Please also note that a C6 Corvette with its 436 HP, 3300 lb curb weight, and vastly more aerodynamic form has a top speed of 186. Mustang GT will not get 6 MPH from that.

They changed aerodynamics on the 2011 a tad.
Moreso probably to increase MPG than top speed.

Most of the time the top speed is based on tires, and not what the car can do.
