Just have 60 miles on my new GT - and the skip-shift is a pain. Personally, I can't see any consistency with the way it activates, except that it engages most often when turning a corner from a stop. It's a nuisance, and I can't imagine it saving any gas. Likely all about Ford meeting CAFE standards.

I'll be . . . . making sure it doesn't happen. . . .

I agree that it's a nuisance! But I can get the car to engage skip-shift pretty regularly. From a stop, using light throttle, the skip-shift will engage if I shift at any point between 2k-2.5k rpms. You might be using much less throttle around a turn, which would might explain why you are receiving the skip shift around a turn and not in a straight line. My impression is that skip-shift is very sensitive to both throttle position (how aggressively you accelerate) and also where in the rpm range you shift. I have found that I can very easily engage 2nd gear, even with the skip-shift indicator being activated if I only wait until over 3k rpms to shift.

If you do activate skip-shift, I have found that the car is much more responsive if instead of skipping from 1st-->4th, I go from 1st--> 3rd gear.

OK.. I stated reading the thread and jumped to page 4 (I'm sure someone is going to blast me for that) but I'm to understand that a fair amount of aftermarket tunes allow you to by-pass the skip shift in programing.. One concern I have (I used a HyperTech tune) and even without that I've noticed that sometimes (rarely) Going into 2nd is tough..I mean to where I'm forcing the it back into 2nd.. It only happens very rarely like 1 a week or so... Thoughts? I hate going to dealerships and showing them things they can't reproduce...

Oh.. and Yes Skip Shift is a pain in the butt.. I've only had my Stang for about 3 months.. It went off maybe 5 or 6 times.. then I did the tune and well it doesn't bother me anymore...

I bought mine used, and I'm wondering if the guy that had it before me put in some kind of delete already - I get the message in the dash, but it still doesn't force me into fourth. Bonus!

I get the message in the dash as well but it doesn't always force you to skip to 4th gear. Mine rarely does the skip shift because of the way i drive but it does happen.

Simple unplugging stops the occasional crap. No cost mod.

Call me crazy but I've gone to manually skip shifting each morning on the way to work. The trans has a little bit of notchiness first time down the street so I pull out of the driveway, go past 4000RPM, then slowly ease it into 4th. Once more pulling onto the main road then after that it's shift as normal. The way I see it is if the trans is only going to be notchy that first time into 2nd and 3rd, skip it and skip the wear along with it. A couple of miles down the main road I hang a right where I downshift to 3rd without incident then back to 4th. For the rest of the day the transmission works flawlessly.

Incidentally, I had the actual skip shift intervene for the first time in a couple of months yesterday. I had strong words for my right foot and I don't think that'll be happening again any time soon!

Disregard, found the post with the link

FWIW, in a mechanical explanation, what is the noise (grinding i guess?) when you shift into a higher gear and the rpms are too low? I get this when the skip shift kicks in since usually it'll shift to 4th and ill barely be a 1000 RPM. I also get it if im in 3rd and happen to not stop completely at a stop sign and too lazy to downshift and just lay into the gas again in 3rd. It this harmful in anyway to the car? thanks!

It's just your engine noise since you have to give it so much gas to get it to move. Not harmful in the least, definitely not grinding.

Yeah, its not really a grinding just couldnt think of the right word to describe it...Maybe more like a Bogging/Choking would be more appropriate???

But it definitely sounds bad but wasnt sure if it was or not. I thought it might've been the tranny or other parts.

Thanks

You're lugging the engine - - too low rpm.

Okay, I'm going to re-state my position on this feature. After doing some in town driving today, skip shift stinks. It makes me look like I miss-shift and can't drive my own car, and essentially lugs it in 4th. So, then I have to downshift to third, or back to second. Really, just a PIA. I am confident that I can equal or better the MPG's - CAFE standards that are behind all of this. But then, that wouldn't let FORD meet regs, now would it...

Gunna have to pull that plug.

I don't have any experience with this skip shift mess but it seems absolutely stupid...when I drive I look at the road not my tach and not my shift *** so why should a little light on my dash dictate to me how I drive?? that seems so stupid...and what if I need to get into a gear that'll give me the torque I need to avoid something and I'm locked out of that gear??? and of course as stated above I'm sure it makes for an embarrassing time when you miss the skip shift.....just my .02

I've got 1100 miles on my Boss and only had skip shift come up like 3 times, for some reason only when my wife decides to take a ride with me..LoL
