Exclamation 2010+ Info as far as we know

This will be a constantly evolving thread with regards to rumours and posted info from various sources on the 'net that have been posted in forums. **this information CAN and probably WILL change over time** And this info is POSTED by Ford, and sources who are in the know from around our friends here, SVTPerformance and BON, as well as SPY SHOTS.
Some time ago there was a focus group on this stang, as well as a sneak peak for workers at Cobo Hall.
*Updated Oct/08*

The Years
2010MY
Ford recently has stated that reskins/redesigns will be 3 model years compared to the current 5. How this affects the Mustang is not yet known.

Production Dates (via Topnotch)

11/10/2008 Date Unscheduled Order Bank (USOB) Opens
12/11/2008 Begin System Fill (Initial Scheduling Prior to Job #1)
12/19/2008 Complete Initial 3 Week System Fill
02/02/2009 Job #1
02/08/2009 Resume Normal Scheduling

The Platform
Still on the D2C (started in 2005 for the Mustang)
There could be an all new Global RWD platform coming out at some point in the 2012-2015 timeframe.
It is not official yet that the upcoming 2010 will last only 3 model years.
Information on Huntsman, whether or not it is actually the platform, or what will eventually evolve into the GRWDP ....

The engines
V6
3.5 or 3.7 have all been thrown around.
More than likely the 3.5 or 3.7 will be the base engine, but nothing we have seen has confirmed this.
Mentioned is the 3.5 EcoBoost engine at some point. At this point I would look past 2011MY for this if it comes to light.
(whether its a regular car/option or SE is unknown)
Unknown yet if the 4.0 sticks around a year like the 4.6.

V8
Alot of info has changed over time in this segment in the last couple of years.
More than likely a pepped up 4.6 3v will be in the 2010
A 5.0L 4v should be in the Mustang GT in 2011MY.
Originally thought to employ Direct Injection, the new 5.0 will be PFI first, and DI added later to its lifecycle.
The 5.0 4v is a decendant of the current gen mod motor based on the 4.6. It is more new than borrowed.

SVT
The GT500/Cobra style car keeps the 5.4 S/C for the time being, with rumours of moving to a smaller TwinForce 5L could be possible in the future. Also Ford is testing looking at Ethanol EcoBoost engines in the future.
Seeing as how the 5.4S/C is not anywhere near its potential for production use, the dial can be turned up for more horsepower when required.

WRT the 6.2L Boss engine, it is relegated to the F150 and not in the stang at this time.

Transmissions
Will they use a 6speed auto or manual?
Or will they carry over the current 5 speeds for the first year, and switchup for the 2011MY?
From pictures and teasers shown, it sounds like most of the powertrain for 2010 remains the same. 5 speed manual is shown
We'll have to see in the coming years if the mustang adopts 6speed manual and automatic transmissions.

Something to consider is the PowerShift transmissions by Getrag
On the roadmap presentation for Ecoboost technology, 6speed tranny's are shown going into most if not all vehicles in the future. This could be a good indication of the 2010+ transmissions.

The Suspension
We all know the 2005 Mustang started out with an IRS.
And we all know that it was yanked and the car had to be fitted with a SRA last minute.
SRA looks to stay. Unknown is the rumours of a WattsLink. From current spyshots, looks like IRS is not in the cards, at least not yet, especially if the car is moving to a new platform in the 2015+MY's.

The Interior
http://forums.bradbarnett.net/galler...p?c=39&userid=
The interior VASTLY improves on the style that started in 05. Newer/better/softer materials and design used.
MyColor stays, Sync 2.0, Next Gen Navigation System, Interior Upgrade Packages and Ambient lighting throughout the packages, as well as sound systems, coloured stitching, and leather trim colours.

The Exterior (see pic below)
GT Coupe
GT500 Vert
Teaser Pics from Ford
The car has hips and is a more aggressive looking car.
It still has a fake gascap/badge at the rear. (GT500 states SVT on it)
Backup assist camera on certain models in the spoiler, well as our 3 vertical tail lamps. (which show white portions between each lamp, for backup lights)
The greenhouse will remain the same shape, and have the glassroof option that started in 08.
Headlights/turn signals integrated.
The antenna has moved from the front passsanger fender to the shorty in the rear passanger fender.

GT retain its grille fogs
The new pony in the grille is redesigned logo. Availible in chrome or black chrome depending on models/packaging.
GT Grille has black surround and black chrome accents (pony/signal light surround)

As anything more comes out, I'll add it.

So what about 09?

So what about 09? I've heard a lot of people talking about a tweak to the current design and a bigger motor for the 09 MY. Is this confirmed, refuted, unknown, or what?

09 is the same as 08

with the exception of some options and probably a BOSS/MACH1 S/E
with more than likely an update in HP 350-400 probably using the 5.4L
but a bunch of other testing enginers were thrown around.

Great summary Boomer!

I do believe Ford will launch a new 5.0L 4V V8 making 400 hp as Fourcam alludes to in your post. However, I don't think that will be the base GT engine, more than likely an SE variant - think Boss 302. The GT will carry on with a more pedistrian version of the new 5.0L engine - maybe in 2V format.

Even with the introduction of the competition from the rest of Detriot, I don't think the GT will ever cross into the 400 hp terrority due to CAFE restricts etc. A 300 - 325 HP V8 in the higher volume GT with cylinder deactivation will certainly make it easier for Ford to roll how higher HP SE models and the top dog SVT model.

5.0 -> GT

and I don't think we'll see a 2v at all.

Agree, it might not be a 2V format but I highly doubt the GT will ever exceed 325 - 350 hp and certainly not 400 hp.

I wouldn't say that. HP and emissions/mileage are not mutually exclusive. Take a gander at Lexus' 4.6L V8 and you'll see fantastic power coupled with amazing refinement, surprisingly decent mileage, and ultra low emissions status. And that 4.6L motor almost makes 400hp despite being in an ultra-smooth Lexus state of tune. Yes it has GDI and runs on premium, but GDI is on the way from Ford and rumurs hint that engines tuned for premium is coming too.

gonna be fun to see how it all unfolds. I've made a deal with the boss, I'll keep my 05 until the 2014 (50th anniversary) models come out - then I get to get whichever one I want.

..........counting the days and praying for lots and lots of HP!

Great summary

I have a bad feeling the Mustang is going to stay with the SRA and the Camaro and Challenger will have the IRS. Given Ford's current financial dire straits, they may be reluctant to spend the additional tooling cost for the IRS. The best source for this would be Ford's axle supplier

If Ford does switch to a global RWD platform, this could very well be a short-lived body style.

I've been hearing rumors that Ford wants to get out a new Sedan RWD platform very soon...if we hear a Lincoln MKR production announcement (which is very likely to happen) this year during the auto shows in the next couple months, there is very strong possibility that its based on a modified Mustang Platform.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't be surprised if any future global rwd platform isn't S197 based to some extent. Structurally S197 is very good, and the Mac Strut IFS is pretty good too. A little tweaking to each of these and an IRS in the back and Ford would have a serious winner. Ford might go all new, but S197 is fundamentally good enough that I would be surprised if this indeed proves to be the case.

And like you I too expect the 2010 Mustang to be a short lived redux. In fact given what we now know I would be willing to bet the rumurs of a full redo for 2012 aren't strictly the result of an overactive imagination.

Agreed,

This chassis could be used globally right away if they just ressurected that IRS. I'm not sure, but I believe the design could potentially accomodate LHD and RHD. GM's Kappa (Solistice) platform didn't do that, but that's another story.

You know, I haven't used the term D2C in so long it had almost slipped my mind entirely. Now that the resident platform police has set me back on the straight path once again I will try not to stray. In all seriousness, thanks Boomer. This will certainly help to keep the less Mustang 'addicted' among us from becoming confused over which acronym means what.
