The terminology can be overwhelming. Think of photo exposure like an eye that is typically closed. Shutter speed is like how long you've opened your eyes, aperture (what some people refer to as "F-stop") is how wide you pupils are, and ISO speed is how sensitive your retinas are to light in general.

Raising or lowing these values independently has a net effect on exposure (essentially brightness or darkness), but they are also inter-related on the sharpness of the photo.


In short:

-Higher ISO sensitivity will brighten the exposure, but will introduce "noise" (graininess from the film days) that will reduce the sharpness.

-A more open aperture will brighten the exposure, but will reduce the depth away from the camera that stays in focus.

-A lower shutter speed allows more time for light to hit the sensor, brightening the exposure. Problem being that it can't stay open for very long, because humans can't physically hold the camera still enough, blurring the picture.



Now, your camera has priority modes in which you can control aperture or shutter speed and it will do the rest, or you can run in full manual and do it all -balance the positive and negative effects of each as you so desire. Like automatic trans vs flappy paddles vs stick (ISO is like traction control haha.... Don't read into that too much)

And that is how to run an SLR camera in a nutshell!
