I can't believe a simple search didn't pull up the existing threads on this topic.

But what a pain it is if u r in traffic at all and cannot consistently "get on it" so as to avoid the skip shift PITA. Thankfully it's defeatable but it took a few months into MY2011 for someone to figure out how.

Try using 2nd gear to start in heavy traffic. First really isn't a necessity. This engine has more torque then it needs and pulls fine in second. In fact, I think it is a smoother start, and in winter, with the Blizzaks, I have no wheel spin at all.

Good suggestion. Being optimistic as I was, I usually hoped for a good start in 1st. But nowadays, having sold my '11 6MT to buy my '12 6AT a year ago due to medical reasons, I just keep it in "D" and all is well regardless.

I have a 2012 Mustang GT wiith 6 speed manual. One feature about the transmission is that it will "decide" to go from 1st to 4th unexpectedly. The owner's manual states that it does this to conserve fuel.

If I wanted an automatic, I would have bought one. L.O.L.! I checked the message center to see if there is a way to deselect that feature. I didn't see it, so I read the owner's manual. There is no mention of how to override the 1 - 4 shift.

Have any of you figured a way to disable this feature? I'd really appreciate your help on this because it annoys the f&#@ out of me.

Thanks!
I feel the same way... If my salesman had briefed me on this during delivery i wouldn't feel so frustrated. Guess my dealer (who is pretty good about service) doesn't sell a lot of 6MTs, most of the cars on the lot are ATs.

shift earlier or possibly disconnect the skip-shift solenoid.

He didn't tell you about it because it is so insignificant that it doesn't matter. Did he tell you about the capless fuel door? Because that's a bigger deal.

Besides starting in second you can also wind 1st out a little more and it won't force the skip shift.

Question: is there a difference in fuel economy if i choose to shift from 1-4 even without the Skip Shift appearing in the digital display?

I think the more time you spend in higher gears the better your fuel economy. It's going to hurt your acceleration but it will help your fuel economy!

Bogged out from 1st to 2nd making a (legal) u-turn and then later in 3rd to 4th during a friendly...er...cruise with another car. Broke out the manual after looking for skip shift and nothing. Later realized I need to crank the RPMs up over 3500 when getting on it from 1-2 and pretty sure I just missed 3-4 and lost like 5 secs not realizing...d'oh! Get outta my head, skip shift...lol. Think Ive got the girl all figured out now, though, at least enough for a track day.

UPDATE

I'm so happy that I disconnected the Skip Shift. The Mustang behaves like a regular car with manual transmission. To any of you who get annoyed by the Skip Shift, I highly recommend that you disconnect it.

According to the owner's manual, skip shift occurs if you are shifting at less than 1500 RPM. I usually shift my Bullitt at 2000 RPM, and when the GT comes in, I don't expect that to change. SOooo if you routinely shift above 1500 RPM you would never see it. Most aftermarket tunes, including Ford, disables the skip shift.
