Rumormill: Ford working on four-door Mondeo coupe
Rumormill: Ford working on four-door Mondeo coupe
The definition of a coupe has been interpeted differently over many years but basically it describes it any car that is closer-coupled and sportier than a regular sedan.
The article also reveals that coupe was used to descibe the classic Rover P5 which had four doors.
According to SAE standards, a coupe is distinguished from a sedan by interior volume. SAE standard J1100 defines a coupé as a fixed-roof automobile with less than 33 cubic feet of rear interior volume. A car with a greater interior volume is technically a two door sedan, not a coupé, even if it has only two doors. So that makes a Cadillac Coupe de Ville NOT a coupe.
Exactly, a coupe is a two door by definition. what's next the minivan coupe and roadster?

It's become the norm to describe 4-doors as "coupes" if they have the sort of aggressive, sporty lines that you'd normally see in a true 2-door. The XF, the Aston Rapide, the Porsche Panawhatever, and others have all been described as "4-door coupes" because of their look.
Ford's of course using the term "coupe" a bit poetically here, referring to coupe-like styling that seems to becoming more de rigueur for those who like the style/image of a 2 door coupe but the practicality of four doors. VW doing the same thing with the Passat and Mercedes has had out their own 4-door coupe (fill in model here) for a few years now.

Maybe Ford is trying to change the definition of coupe?
