Picked up a 2005 FX4 4x4
needs an engine rebuild or replacement 5.4L. Kbb shows it worth around 9700 in good condition.

Yea it looks like the oil wasn't changed in like 100k miles. The worst I have seen in the 12+ or so engines I have rebuilt.
I was in the process of taking the head off when I took the head picture. Gear was on the work bench.
I need to get the heads off to see if I will rebuild it or just get a reman engine. That oil pan has 1/4 inch of slimy metal speckled sludge in it. Nasty

Oil changes are highly overrated.
The guts of this engine look better than the jeep did recently. I axcutally expected to see much worse damage. The crank bearings are scored up a bit. The connecting rod bearings look very good. The cylinders look pretty freaking good too. The pistons have most of the coating wore off them and some light scoring.

now to decide on rebuilding vs a remaned engine or low miles replacement
Of course I need to check to see if its needs to be bored, if it needs a bore I will probably just go the reman/replacement engine. Block werk costs to much.
