The Esprit has always used Lotus designed and built motors, from the original I4 to the current flat-crank V8. The Elise used a Rover I4 for a few years but upgraded to, yes, a rice-burner Toyota I4 mill which is a much better motor.

They've also used motors from Ford, sometimes with Lotus-design heads -- all through the '60s into the '70s -- and Isuzu in the 2nd gen Elan.

I think Lotus should develop a twin turbo version of that engine for the Esprit replacement. It would be keeping more in character with Lotus compared to a SC, IMO...
