Ford says Focus is best-selling car in the world
http://blog.al.com/wire/2013/04/ford...st-sellin.html
DETROIT — Ford Motor Co. says its Focus small car was the best-selling vehicle nameplate in the world last year, with just more than 1 million sold.
More than a quarter of all Focuses were sold in China, its largest market. The U.S. was the car's second-largest market.
It was the second year in a row the Focus has outsold the Toyota Corolla, according to data from automotive firm R.L. Polk. Rounding out the top five sellers were Ford's F-Series pickup, the Wuling Zhiguang minivan and the Toyota Camry midsize car.
Polk counts vehicles by nameplate, so versions of the Corolla sold under different names aren't counted.
Toyota says if its Matrix hatchback and other Corolla variants are included, it outsold the Focus by 186,000 vehicles.

Fiesta and Fusion are not related in any way.
Corolla, Matrix and Auris are. Its the same car sold under difference badge.
But then again, a Volkswagen, for an example, could count Golf's and Jetta's sales, plus many more Seat, Skoda and Audi models that are built on the same platform.

Depends on your definition of "different". Corolla and Matrix share everything except that one is sedan and one is a hatchback. Which is a lot more than Ford F-150 and SuperDuty share and Ford still counts their sales together.

So unless the Matrix were called the Corolla M or something, moot point.

Toyota Says Corolla is Best-Selling Car in 2012, Not Ford Focus
http://wot.motortrend.com/toyota-say...#axzz2Q6EWTodD
Toyota representative Mike Michels said his company sold 1.16 million Corollas, putting it ahead of the Focus. “Corolla registrations attributed to Polk come up short by nearly 300,000 units,” Michels said in an e-mailed statement to Bloomberg Buisnessweek. “This discrepancy is glaring and we have requested clarification.” Bloomberg Buisnessweek points out that arriving at an accurate tally is a daunting task due to a number of reasons, including the fact that the Corolla is also offered in a number of variants (some with different nameplates) in other markets. The Matrix, for example, is essentially a Corolla wagon. The Auris, the Verso, and the Rukus are sold outside of the U.S. and are also considered Corolla variants.

I just read that Toyota announced the sky was green.
Must be true because Toyota said it. And they are a foreign carmaker. If Ford had said that they'd be lying because they're Americans.

Toyota could have chosen to market the Matrix as a Corolla, but they didn't. They could have marketed a Corolla Auris, but chose not to. They did not have to create a separate brand, Scion, but they did. For the company to complain now that regardless of the name, or the brand the sales should be totaled together as a "Toyota Corolla" is disingenuous.
Good point about Volkswagen. They definitely get a good ROI on their platform R&D.

Fiesta and Fusion are not related, but the C1 platform used for the Focus does embrace other Ford products. For example the C1 is used for the C-Max, the Grand C-Max, the Escape, and the Kuga in addition to the Focus. By Toyota's logic the sales of these vehicles should be added to the Focus total. (In fact, isn't the Transit Connect based on the C1?)
