Ford Ranger to avoid the axe in '09?
Originally slated to be given a gold watch, a pat on the back, and then shown the door in 2009, the Detroit News reports that the current Ranger might live on until 2011, when its new global replacement will be ready.

I actually really liked that move. With the F150 being the only vehicle left using the Essex V6 I wouldn't be surprised to learn that it was actually to simply shut that engine line down and stuff more 2-valve 4.6L V8's under the hood instead. And since the 4.6L knocks down almost exactly the same fuel economy as the V6 (only one mpg worse hwy and identical city) I see this as a win all around.
Worth mentioning is that fuel economy is on apparently Ford's mind with the F150. Seems the F100 will be based on a smaller, lighter version of the F150's basic design and then that lighter evolution of the current F150 will be scaled back up somewhat to render a new F150 when the time comes. This is obviously being done with the intent of making the F150 lighter....and perhaps a little smaller....than the current model. All of this is according to statements made by Blue II over on BON.

I just found this on the Ford Fleet website:
https://www.fleet.ford.com/showroom/...009-ranger.asp
It shows the 3.0L engine is gone. That isn't true for the '08 model.
This is the first real sign I have seen that the 2009 models are going to be here soon.

The 3.0L gone? They should kill the 4.0L instead. The 3.0L had both reasonable power and good fuel economy. I know that first hand since I have driven both on a job I had on an Auto Parts Store. We kept the 3.0L 96 Ranger single cab w manual on our store and transfered the 4.0L to another one for that reason.

He has a 4x4 supercab and says he can't even get to 18mpg ever.

The 4.0L engine has been around since the first Explorer. It deserves more the axing than the other one. Even the 4.0L that my old Jeep Cherokee had gave me better mpg and performance than that hunk of scrap, and I hated that Jeep, but I smoked many Explorers with it , except the 5.0, of course! lol
