Ford F-150 With EcoBoost Rated at 365 Horsepower, 420 Pounds-Feet

http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2010/09...unds-feet.html

Last month, we told you about Ford’s three new powertrains for the 2011 Ford F-150. At the time, Ford announced the truck’s first implementation of its 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 but was mum on power ratings. Today, Ford said the engine is rated at 365 horsepower with 420 pounds-feet of torque on regular fuel.
Those torque ratings beat out all but the new 6.2-liter V-8, available on the top-of-the-line F-150 and base 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty. The EcoBoost’s toque ratings are better than the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8s in the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the 5.7-liter V-8 in the 2011 Ram 1500, the 5.7-liter V-8 in the 2011 Toyota Tundra and the 5.6-liter V-8 in the 2011 Nissan Titan.
Up to 90 percent of the EcoBoost’s peak torque will be available from 1,700 rpm to 5,000 rpm — intriguing figures, considering the 3.5-liter EcoBoost implemented on Ford’s cars and crossovers hits peak torque around 3,500 rpm.
The V-6 can tow 11,300 pounds, which is the same maximum towing figure as the 6.2-liter V-8 and beats the best ratings that Chevrolet, Dodge and Toyota can cook up right now. Maximum payload is rated at 3,060 pounds, again the best rating for a half-ton pickup.
The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 will be mated to Ford’s revamped 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission, which is rated for up to 7,000 rpm. The model will also feature Ford’s electric power-assisted steering system, new to the Ford F-150 for 2011.
All of this is supposed to give the EcoBoost not only the best towing, torque and payload figures but also “outstanding” fuel economy, Ford says.
Ford has yet to release final gas mileage figures for this powertrain. The 2011 F-150 will be available later this year; the 2011 F-150 with EcoBoost will be available in early 2011.
  • Best-in-class 420 pounds-feet of torque at 2,500 rpm versus premium V-8 competitors
  • Up to 90 percent of peak torque available from 1,700 rpm to 5,000 rpm
  • Best-in-class 11,300 pounds maximum trailer towing versus all competitors
  • Best-in-class 3,060-pound payload rating versus all competitors

I don't get this - Ford has two engines (3.5L EcoBoost and 5.0L) with almost identical numbers.

Why ... ?

For those die-hard tech scared people who don't like changed and are unsure about the TTV6 in a truck.

Will the 5L cost less then the Ecoboost? Which is the true base engine? I would be surprised to see all of those base white work trucks they sell running around with an Ecoboost V6

Whatever griping some trucker neanderthals might have about an Egoboost 3.5 in an F-150, it certainly won't be for a lack of power or torque, low-end or peak. HD reliability will certainly be a wild card variable that will only be proven over time, but the TT3.5 looks impressive so far.

How much of an economy and/or emission improvement will the Egoboost represent over the 5.0?

I'm guessing the 5.0 will get atleast 1 mpg better then the old 4.6 3v. the 4.6 3v was rated 21hwy. so it should be 22 or 23 for the 5.0.
I'm guessin the 6.2 will eclipse the old 5.4 with 20hwy and the ecoboost will be 24 maybe 25. and the 3.7 will be about the same as the ecoboost in fuel economy.

thats my guesses.

If the EB engines can stand up well to true work truck use, given the number of F150's sold, these could be a great source for swaps in the future. That torque curve is practically diesel-like. How soon until someone pirates and adapts the parts for 2011+ V6 'Stang usage?

The Ecoboost-equipped F150 looks pretty impressive in terms of performance; the 5.0L and 6.2L do, too. I guess I'd rather Ford offer a small diesel, but that doesn't look like it'll be happening any time soon.

As nice as a small diesel would be the diesel would cost 3 times as much as the ecoboost, and would it be 3 times the engine? probably not.

The sheer amount of swap fodder the new F-150's are going to provide is mind boggling. 5.0L V-8, 3.5L EB V-6, and the 6.2L V-8. It's like muscle car heaven waiting to be raided.

I'd be willing to guess that a diesel would fare far better in terms of mileage. From Pickuptrucks.com, talking about the "Eco"boost engine,

"Fuel economy was also V-8-like. We observed a range of 8.9 mpg to 9.7 mpg..."

Diesel engines can also live well into the 300,000 mile + territory (there are some Cummins-equipped Dodge Rams out there with a 1 million hard miles on them!). Personally, I think a light-duty diesel is a no-brainer for those who tow and / or put a whole lot of miles on their trucks in a short period of time; this way, they're not stuck having to buy a new truck every two years.

An executive at Ford told the Detroit Free Press today that the EcoBoost V-6 will be a $1750 option on the 2011 Ford F-150, which would make the starting price as low as $25,140.
