Ford confirms new transmissions

For those of you disappointed that the F-150 and Escape/Mariner/Tribute were to continue with 4-speed automatics, Ford confirmed that there are 6-speeds in the future for both product lines hidden in a press release regarding the $866 billion investment in Michigan plants. Here's the link to the story on BON. The specific items from the press release are:

  • Van Dyke Transmission Plant received $320 million to install a flexible machining line to assemble a fuel-efficient, high performance 6-speed, front-wheel drive transmission for the next generation Ford Escape.
  • Livonia Transmission Plant received $88 million to install flexible tooling to increase its production of a fuel-efficient, high performance 6-speed, rear-wheel drive transmission for the 2009 Ford F-150.

Great.

Now, if Ford could also increase horsepower on F-150 4.6L ...

I get 26/27 in town/31/32 on the highway in my '05 auto tranny Focus. With a six speed, I'm sure I would get over 30 in town and mid-30s on the highway. Ford needs to do this to kick Toyota and others in the ***.

My '96 3.0L Taurus rountinely got over 36 highway at 70 mph or better (I got over 39 after a tune up driving round trip to DC). I can be done.

Actually the investment was in several Michigan plants but your point is well taken. I didn't snap when I copied the text from BON.
