I have a 99 truck that blew out a spark plug. Ripped the threads and everything.

Yup, that's where I would head to as well.

 

That is a common problem, Ford won't cover it under warranty or recall either. One of the reasons I sold my 99 Expedition. Do a google search for Ford Truck World, lots of info there. Bottom line, you're out about $2,500 for a new head and labor. Sorry. :notnice:

Nope, it blew out of the head. The aluminum heads on those are prone to it. The plugs are only held on by like 3 threads, it happens more than you care to imagine. I had a friend who only had 35K miles on his truck when it happened, driving less than 25 MPH. My Expedition had almost 100K and no problems. Got to replace the whole head, there's a big hole in it now.

 

From what i heard Ford just recalled it to fix that problem, www.fordtruckworld.com is a great place to go also. the 02 newer are 6 thread so ford is upgrading all of them but the older motors were 3 thread for some stupid flippin reason.

 

Correct on the threads. If in fact the plugs are torqued down correctly even with the 3 threads they will be fine. It does sound like more than the plug was responsible for this. The 3 thread design could loosen and pop out but not "blow" out (from the information I have gained from the techs at work) without another factor in the equation.

Sounds like there was something else there Dswhalen. I would take it to a trusted mechanic or Ford dealership and have it checked out. Make sure they tighten down the spark plugs to the correct torque rating too. There was a thread on this subject a couple months ago.

This happened to on my 01 GT with about 40K miles on it. The dealer wouldn't repair it, they wanted to charge me something like $3000 dollars to replace the head. Anyways, I found a real mechainic to install a plug insert and put another 25K miles on it with no problems until I sold it.

 

Same thing happened to mine about 1 1/2 years ago. 2001 F-150.
I go to f150online if I have problems.

 

My uncle's 02 has the 6 threads and hes had no issues. and Andy- I've heard that the 3 threads just arent strong enough to hold down the plug and they just blow out of the head.

 

This happened to my brothers 2001 Bullitt Mustang. He had the head retapped at a shop and now the one plug has is sleeved to fit the new taping. Was cheap and the car works fine now.
