I hope you don't use that line on your girlfriends, wife, mistress, SO! Next time you're bellied-up at some bar next to some cutie, mention to her how she's not THAT ugly and see how things go from their.

The whole gist of the conversation really say's it all, that we're arguing how not so awful it is rather than how it is the class leader Ford really needs to pull themselves out of their plummeting nose dive.

Yeah, we know it would be nice to get the Euro Focus. We didn't. But we will get the next one. We have no idea how much it costs/how long it takes to get a car certified for a new market, how long it takes or how much it would cost to build/ship new tools to open up mk2 Focus factories on our soil, and after all of that, the mk2 would be long in tooth AND expensive. For a dirt cheap car, our recently refreshed Focus is a great option. Compare the thing to Elantras, Aveos, and Cobalts. Don't hold it against the new $20k Civic. You can do that when we get the hella expensive third gen Focus.

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've read today. How the heck can you even compare the effects of comments about a car's looks with the effects of comments on a woman's looks? You either buy a car you like and drive it home, or you don't. You don't have to sweet talk and come up with clever pickup lines to get a car to go home with you. At least I don't.

If the European Focus debuted with the styling of the '08 US Focus you'd all be having a Eurogasm about how great the styling was.

We're arguing because you guys keep going overboard in endless hyperbole about how bad its styling is. If it's bad then the styling on this orange turd is just as bad:

But it's from Europe, therefore it's beauty incarnate.

So, what you're saying is that Honda can afford to produce a desireable, quality car, but Ford cannot?

Is that pretty much the gist of it?

I normally can get a few good laughs from an internet argument, but your little summation of what I said made so little sense I just have no idea how to respond. If you want to go ahead and read my post a few more times, then give your response a second go, feel free.

No, but you'll need one helluva line to get her into your car at the end of the night when she realizes it's a POS '08 Focus.

Ah, no we wouldn't. Because Ford of Europe wouldn't be so stupid as to cobble together such a horrible design abortion in 2007.

And golly, Ford is the number one selling brand in the UK. Imagine that. Must be one of them there coincidences, eh?

So you believe that "orange turd" is no more attractive than the '08 North American Focus...?

Eye exams are quite painless you know.

I'm sorry, I thought I was clear. Let me elaborate further: You seem to be asserting that the only way Ford can get us a car as good as a $20K Civic made in North America is to bring over the third generation Focus made - or at least designed - in Europe, which you seem to believe will be very expensive.

Yeah, you just about hit the nail on the head. The easiest way for Ford to build a car so much better than a similarly priced Honda or Toyota that people/critics/magazines will actually pay attention (and it will have to be SO much better to overcome market intertia) would be build ing the Euro designed mk3 in Mexico.

And they may well do that, who knows. Most industry observers say the Fusion is the best build Ford EVER, and it's assembled in Mexico. I think that says a lot.

I also think it may portend the future direction of the company.

It probably explains why the UAW have been relatively conciliatory lately. Why does Ford need them, really?

Unfortunately, what may be good for Ford's bottom line - critical, in fact - may not be so good for American workers in this global economy.

Dear Ford,

Hurry with the Mk3 Focus - and please make it look good!

Sincerely,
XXXXXX

- Seriously, I would not want to pay to own something that looks like the '08 Focus.

Holy cow, that's just soooo much a better design. It has a cohesiveness and sophistication that shows it was done by real professionals. The big grill opening could easily look goofy in lesser hands, but they've managed to make it look both interesting and cohesive. This shows that an "econobox" need not be a penalty box but rather, a pleasure to drive and look at.

The N.A. Focus on the other hand looks like a clumsy agglomeration of just about every current styling cliche spackled onto a poor, aging car by some study-hall refugee designer. The sooner it goes to pasture via the rental car lots of America, the better.
