Switching out guage cluster?

Switching out guage cluster?
A friend of mine recently acquired a 96 mustang v6. There seems to be some electrical problems in the dash as we found the headlight switch was burned out (actually melted the connector), the guage backlighting does not work, nor do the odometer or trip meter.
We replaced and rewired the headlight switch; it works great. But the guage cluster...how do you go about setting the mileage on it if I were to find another?
Also...I don't know a thing about the 96 models exhaust setup. Was it single pipe or dual pipe with a y-pipe? This car currently has dual exhaust with holes big enough to put my fist in...and I have a large fist. I just took a quick glance but the entire system seems to be welded together...even welded to the frame; no hangers. We plan on cutting it out and replacing.

First off, the stock v6 system was a Y-pipe coming off the headers, funneling the exhuast into a single pipe and muffler. If there is dual exhaust on the car, it is definitely aftermarket. You'll have to look yourself to see whether it has true dual exhaust (with a midpipe and two seperate mufflers and pipes) or if the single exhaust just splits into two pipes. If your friend wants to keep dual exhaust on the car, there are quite a few good systems for V6 models.
As for the the guages: the mileage info is not stored within the instumentation. It is stored on the the car's computer, so a new speedometer/odometer, whether new or used, will plug into the computer and just display the mileage. The difficulty in changing mileage is the main reason they changed to computerized digital odometer.

Cant see how the exhaust is welded to the frame as it needs to move to reduce vibration and stress, hence rubber hangers. How much did he aquire for? Sounds like a lot of trouble could be hiding but also sounds like a project car!!
