Check Coolant Light

For the last couple weeks, my Check Coolant light has been coming on pretty consistantly (it's the yellow square with what looks like an 'X' in it). It started out only coming on during long, hot drives, but has become more often, even when it's cooler in the morning. Ive checked the overflow bottle at least a dozen times since the light started coming on, and its always been at the 'fill' level or higher.

I dont know why this is happening and there's no way I dont have enough coolant. If I take the cap off the radiator bottle, the coolant is only about an inch from the top, and the thermostat temperature has never risen above half of the temp range, so it's running cool. What worries me is that the light is becoming more common, indicating that whatever the problem is may be getting worse.

Does anyone have any idea what going on? I'm stumped.

I experienced a similar thing... when we had to pull a head and replace it on my 2000gt, the coolant light stayed on 100% of the time afterwards. I never replaced a censor, but my friend that was a mechanic at ford said it was pretty common sensor problem. as to which one, im not sure, I never researched it more or tried to correct since I traded the car for the cobra shortly thereafter.

I hope you guys are right. Im not really concerned, like i said, because the coolant level is fine. I have to figure out where the sensor is.

just get the car warm, to where it starts cycling the coolant through, and make sure the overflow doesnt run low. Just keep an eye on it, also where you park and watch for spots on the drive.

As long as the levels are right I guess it should be fine.

I briefly had this on my 97 COBRA. It happened the first time on a hot day just after a wash and rinsing the dust off under the hood for a show. I initially thought it was H2O in the connector but it turned out that the sliding float on the sensor in the coolant recovery bottle was binding and after gently sliding it up and down its full range of motion a couple of times it has not bothered since. Hope this helps.

Where's the sensor at? Is it along the top of on the side?

The coolant reservoir on top of the rad. If you open the coolant fill when cold you should be able to see(youve been changing you coolant regular right?) a shaft with a floating bob on it. You can actually see the wire coming through the tank just below the fill cap on the underside of the tank. I used a pair of long nosed pliers to GENTLY work it the full range of motion a couple of times. If your coolant is dirty you may need a powerful flashlight from the side to see it. As well you may want to(again being careful!) undo and clean the electrical connecter from the harness and clean it with some electronic sensor cleaner. Again I stress to be careful as these plastics see a lot of heat and ozone and tend to get brittle. Let us know if this solves it.
