98 Cobra with coil on plug ign

I am looking at buying a 1989 LX with a 1998 Cobra drivetrain but it has coil on plug ignition.
All the photos and info I can find has duel coil packs with plug wires. Am I not looking at a cobra engine? What could it be out of?

Probably a MK8 motor with a Cobra intake.

There is a guy on the SVT forums that sells a wiring harness conversion that allows a straight swap from the 96-98 twin coil packs to the 99+ COP setup. This may be something like that. The feedback I've heard from people on this swap is better throttle response, smoother idle, and a little bit more power.

If I were to be doing that swap into a Fox, I would definitely start with the MK's motor rather than the Cobra simply for the price, because if price wasn't a big deal, you would have just bought a Cobra to begin with. The MK had coil on plugs, and I believe that the Cobra intake would just bolt onto it. They also had the teksid block, so I think it would be hard to tell if it's a Cobra motor with COPs, or a MK motor with a Cobra intake.

Coil on Plug is just a computer swap. prob has a 99-01 cobra computer. Coil on Plug is much better than the twin coil pack set up b/c the only ignition upgrade is the MSD DIS-4 for the 96-98 cars. and I have had all sorts of trouble with the ignition box. Has been sent back to MSD twice and replaced. Coil on plug is much better ignition and can just upgrade the individual coils and works better than my DIS 4 and two tach adapters and two coil packs. Will end up doing the coil on plug on my car in the near future. prob this winter
