Whats the best way to face my subs?

Just wondering if I should face my subs towards the rear of the trunk, or towards the front of the car. I'm thinking if I put the subs right up to my rear seat opening and have them facing the inside it will sound louder and not have my trunk rattling and the license plate rattling? Any thoughts? Why is one way better than the other?

They wont produce bass the same way facing forwards, it has to do with reflecting the air. Face them towards the trunk, or for the most bass face them into the box (magnets out), or get a box made with porting for the subs.

Face them forward if you want to seal them off COMPLETELY from the trunk behind them. This will get you the most unadulterated and cleanest sound. If you're just sitting a box in the trunk, all the way against the rear seat, facing the taillights will work the best.

Facing the magnets inside or outside the box has absolutely zero significance in the sound of the woofers. In fact, sometimes mounting inverted (magnets out) can allow mechanical noise to be heard that would normally be masked by the enclosure. This is strictly woofer-dependent.

I agree with these guys..... I have a removeable box with 12" Rockford subs; when I turn it forward I lose A HUGE amount of volume compared to when it faces backward.

Yeah, in these cars facing the back seems loudest, into the seat seems the cleanest/tightest. The direction you face the box seems dependent on the acoustics of the car you have, but most like ours seem to benefit from facing rearward.

It's normally always best to face subs towards the rear of the car. Subs are low frequencies so they take a longer distance and are not directional (why you can always hear someone elses bass driving by). Crutchfield has it summed up.

Face them toward the back of the car, sounds and looks better that way.

Well if I face them forward towards the cab, and seal off the sides of the box so the bass can only go forward would that sound the best. I just want clean clear bass. I don't want a bunch of trunk rattles, like I have heard from other members with their subs facing rear wards.

IF you seal them off so the sound is ducted into the cabin only, yes, this will sound teh best. It will also allow you to use less power and avoid trunk rattles.

Absolutely untrue. There are no "always" in acoustics. Ever.
