Shaker 500 speaker replacement
I want to replace the stock Shaker 500 6x8 speakers. Should I use 4 ohm speakers or can I use 2 ohm speakers? I was thinking Kenwood X680 for rear and Infinity for front Kappa or Reference.

I just put in a pair of Infinity Kappa's today, in the rear deck....
Early indication is....
I've read a lot of posts about after market sound equipment, but had no idea just how poor the Shaker system is until I plugged in the Alpine HU and the Infinitys......
Major league improvement......

Use 4 ohm speakers with the factory Shaker 500 head unit.
I got 4 Pioneer TS-A6871R 6"x8" speakers for Christmas and installed them two days ago. They came from www.crutchfield.com so they included step-by-step instructions and wiring adapters so no wires had to be cut. The job took me about 2 hours total.
There is a definite improvement in sound quality, but it's not as huge as I expected. On my '95 GT with the "Premium" stereo, I replaced the 6x8's with some Polks, and the difference was huge! I think the Shaker 500 6"x8" component speakers in the doors are not horrible speakers as far as stock speakers go. But they are paper cone speakers, so they're not great by any means. The stock rear deck speakers are crap, no doubt. So the Pioneers are a huge improvement over the rear speakers, and a somewhat lesser improvement over the door speakers.
I am definitely satisfied with the Pioneers, for relatively inexpensive replacements.

I had the Shaker 500 stereo with my '06 and was trying to figure out how to improve the bass after installing my Avic-Z1 (did the install on my own and saved myself tons of money on the install ). So I looked around and finally considered installing two 8" woofers in the rear which are connected to the stock amp. After checking prices I came across an Alpine Type R 10" in a box! I disconnected the rear speakers, cut off the factory harness, and ran just the right side wires down to the sub, works great! I need to go buy some dynamat material for the trunk now!
Here is a link to my install as well as my pics!!!

I have the Pioneer A-6881Rs in the rear. Huge difference in bass response and highs. I highly recommend them. The only reason I haven't put them in the doors is because I haven't had the guts to take the door panels off, otherwise I would in a heart beat.

Don't be afraid of the door panels, really easy to take off, there are some instructions on here somewhere.
I just installed a set of Infinity Kappa 682.7cf in my Lightning. Much better highs and vocals. They are a 2 ohm design, so they are very effecient and still work great with the stock stereo. You can use these with the Shaker 500, though the amps will have less resistance and will increase the actual max wattage output, thus possibly decreasing service life and increasing distortion. Will they work and sound good? yes Will my stock amps last as long, probably not. They were cheap at 63 bucks off ebay.
I have four 4way Pioneer TS-A6880R in my Mustang, and they sound much better than the stockers, pretty cheap, too. They are 4 ohm but still pretty effecient at 91db sensitivity. I think sensitivity is important when dealing with the stock system since there is not a lot of watts there to work with. If you shop around, you can get 4 Pioneers for a hundred bucks.
