S-197 Mustang Steering Wheel Options! / 07 GT swapping for 08 GT500 Steering Wheel
Hey guys, so I have a 07 GT I知 looking to put a 08 GT500 Steering wheel in. Has anybody personally done this or had it done? How complicated is it? I知 assuming I should have it done professionally, which is fine, but I知 just worried about the air bag situation. Can the factory air bag be reused with the new steering wheel? Also has anyone just changed out the steering wheel center cap? I致e read some places saying it痴 part of the air bag assembly and others saying it痴 a simple swap. Thanks!

They are the same steering wheel system in every way. Either airbag can be used in either steering wheel. The car will not care.
Yes, people have changed out the center cap. If you wanted, the cover has to be taken off, and the cap *carefully* removed because in the GT500 it's both glued and secured with 'ears' that have to be bent up. It will survive, however the standard button will not. Overall completely not worth it if you have the airbag you want, just bolt that one in and be done with it.
Hope that helps! Pics!
/Interesting little tidbit... All steering wheels (JUST the wheels, mind) from '79 to '21 will exchange. There's an actual 'train' of proof where a guy/gal moves a '15-'21 into a '10-14, then someone else puts a '10-14 into a '05-'09... then from '05-'09 into a '94-'04... then from a '94-04 into a '79-'93. Tada and things, right? No really, it's happened, people have done those swaps, which proves out that technically speaking, they're all 'compatible'. The problem is the clockspring, wiring, and/or airbags thereto (because I'm still a might concerned different model designs won't like different airbags), but fitment wise, yes, it does happen to work like that!

Bah. I had that info typed, deleted, typed again, then deleted and posted that. Dang drain bamage strikes again.
/Odd note... I had the opportunity to sit in one... and I didn't like that wheel. Well, not the 10-2 grips. Otherwise it's quite lovely. Go figure. If I could get that leather wrap for a normal GT wheel, definitely would have it.
//I can do it... or get it done.. but eh.
