This is just the topic I was looking for, though I have a slightly different question.

I have the shaker 500, and I listen to a myriad of different genres of music. My problem with the system comes directly from the door mounted subs, they are annoying. The rear 5x7s actually provide a much better bass sound and they sound better when the system is cranked up. The door subs, however, clip a lot with a hard bass drum and it makes the sound very cheap. I've resorted to fading the music somewhat to the back, just enough to avoid this as well as providing highs from the front speaker.

My question is, should I replace these with subs that wont clip so easily or is there a way to shut off the door 8s without shutting off the 5x7s in the door? I dont want to spend too much on the 8s right now because later in the year when money stabilizes again, i'm going to revamp the whole system, but for now I just want clarity. What do you guys suggest?

It isn't the sub amps clipping, it is the outputs from the factory head unit. My factory 8's get pretty loud using an aftermarket head. Also, after a full dose of sound deadening (100 sq ft of eDead V1se and 3 GAL's of v3 ) they actually do a pretty good job. Deaden your doors and you may actually be happy with the factory drivers- I for one am still getting some custom ones made.

I tried to get Ben to make me some 8's, but he simply stopped responding. Those are TangBand drivers, and there WILL be an 8" version soon.

Wonder how this one sounds

Boy, those eD drivers are pretty Infinity, which ones are the Tang Band drivers?

Reminisce, you can just unplug the harnesses from the factory amps -- the upper ones are the speaker wires and won't hang down visibly. They are under the driver's knee panel on the far left.

The new flat ones are identical to http://www.tb-speaker.com/detail/1208_03/wt-1427b.htm

I think TB may be the OEM for eD now.

Gotcha. TB has some neat designs; I'm hoping to get a pair of the 5" subs for my kitchen, and I keep wishing they would make that 6x9 sub a little smaller so as to fit the stang rear deck.

so TB plans an 8" version of the cool flat dealies? or eD?

TB said they were going to do an 8, Ben said he doesn't want to do an 8. He only caters to owners of BMW, Acura, and Lexus cars, with the occasional Scion. Good customer service, but he's a bullheaded, stubborn ***** at other times.

well, who isn't in this industry? at least TB is out there. I'm still interested in the Lorentz drivers but depending on how the amp situation goes I'd also be very into TBs.

Factory Subs left alone...

I just had my Shaker 500 system removed, and a complete new system installed, minus the OEM Subs.
They are being powered by an MTX Thunder 280, and sound fantastic.
I dont know how long they will last with the power being sent to them, but until they lose sound quality, I'll keep on pumping up the volume. Of course, I know that they will have to be replaced at some point, and hopefully at that time, someone will have marketed an affordable "drop in".

New system is:
Eclipse head uint
Eclipse 3422 4 channel amp powering:
Diamond Audio M361i (front doors)
Pioneer TS-A6870R (rear panels)
MTX Thunder 280 2 channel amp powering:
Ford factory Subs.

So what is the best 8" sub if you just use the factory Shaker 500 and stock amp, and don't want to chop your door up? In other words, is there a good bolt in replacement?
