@#$% rear speaker screws

So Ive had a set of Pioneer 6X8s laying around for over a year, just never got around to installing them.

Well today was the day.

I did a search and loaded up on the necessary info to do the job, backed the car into the shade, popped the trunk, scooted the passenger seat all the way foreward, climbed into the backseat armed with a screwdriver and a short t20 star bit. Pried the speaker cover off, after about 5 seconds, I got out of the car, walked over to the rollaway, got a nice sharp pair of wire dykes and a flashlight. I leaned into the trunk and cut the plastic screw anchors and pushed the speaker up and out of the mounting hole, turned it sideways and dropped it into the trunk along with what was left of the anchors and torx bolts. Took about 3 minutes each side. The new speakers are held in with 3/4in #8 machine screws with flat and lock washers.

As far as Im concerned thats the only way to do a rear speaker removal.

I popped mine exactly the same way. That was a ****er of a way to put in speakers.

Yep, those are a major pain in the neck. I managed to change them out on lunch one day though. I have Pioneer 3-ways back there and now that they're in, they're staying in.

The torx bit will fit into a 1/4 inch rachet wrench or box end and it isn't too bad that way.

torx bit + small crescent wrench + flathead screwdriver + 5min = taking out rear deck speakers without cutting out plastic tabs

Im happy with my method. If I ever replace them or need to do any additional wiring it will be a piece of cake, and I dont have to worry about scratching the tint.

Also, with those plastic inserts gone, you can actually get a speaker to seal to the rear deck. You know, like they're supposed to do.
