Project Classic Rock Audio for 2005 GT

My 2005 Mustang GT was stripped down quite a bit soon after buying it for drag racing purposes, and after hanging up my helmet it went into the garage in 2011. After sitting for 3 years, I started making it streetable again. While a bit loud, it's now a fun weekend cruiser for car shows, cruise ins, and just tearing up on the import crowd.

The Shaker 1000 trunk sub and amp was pulled and sold long ago. I've been watching the Raxiom thread and am about to order the unit and install it with the back up camera, although I'm omitting satellite radio since I'm not interested. Seems somewhat straightforward although while a wrencher I've never tackled car audio in my life--just not my thing (even the home TV, blue ray and soundbar/subwoofer had me scratching my head for a bit).

Before I start tearing the interior apart, I wonder if I should upgrade the speakers, and consider putting an amp and/or subwoofer back into the vehicle. I'm 58 and listen mostly to classic rock and modern blues (guitar driven music) so the deep bassy vibe of younger music fans isn't my thing. I just want clear music sound that I can crank over the sound of the exhaust!

Any recommendations on speakers, amps and subs? I would think just going with speakers would be an improvement, and adding a sub the next step. thoughts? Thanks in advance--John

Speaker recommendations at least? I'm finally ordering the Raxiom Nav/radio to replace the Shaker 1000 head unit (as stated, no trunk subs/amps anymore) and want some advice on the door subwoofers and the other speaker tweaker/mid range, plus the two rear deck speakers (I think they're 6x8s). Crutchfield has a LOT of recommendations but I'm no audiophile so I can't make heads or tails out of the recommendation.

I have some pioneer TS-6802s (if I recall correctly) -- they are / were a massive improvement over the stock speakers when I put them in using my factory Shaker 1000 head unit.

In terms of door subwoofers, the two options I considered were the Shelby Kicker kit (somewhat factory look, very easy to install), which are subs, and getting JL ZR800-CWs (which are midbass drivers), then modifying the factory grilles to fit over them.

I decided on the Kicker setup for cost, and ease of installation.

I got the Shelby Kicker kit that was mentioned above for the subs. Then I got a Kicker satellite kit, which replaced the upper speaker and added the tweeter in front of the door handle. The satellite kit made the biggest difference IMO, getting the high range above the base and mid helped a lot.

Are you using the Ford OEM kick panel amps to drive the door woofers?

I am not.

Apparently, the Shelby/Kicker kit can be used with the stock amps, but from my research, they need an aftermarket amp to really run well.
