Hey guys!

I plan on adding these where the door subs are
6.5" Midbass Kit

and putting these in the front doors
5.25" Components

anyone think I will have problems putting these speakers in, and running it off the factory headunit/amps?

The headunit and amp I want wont be out till April, but I want to switch the speakers out now. Could this be a temporary set up? Will the speakers be under powered? Will it even work?

thanks!

Way under wattage...any reason for those 6.5's...where you going to put them exactly? To each his own but don't think you will get the sound you are looking for, especially with stock head unit.

By going with a 2-way component plus add-on sub you are going to have 4 speakers to drive rather than just two. Even if you wire in series you are going to have an issue with the crossover. Basically, the crossover is going to limit what frequencies your component is putting out, whereas your midbass is going to try and put everything out (since its not connected to the crossover.) You could add in a capacitor or something, but good luck matching it to your 2-way setup.

Just look around for some 3-way component setups. I am going to purchase one from alphasonik, but there are other brands that make them as well.

Ok, if any of you want to take the time...click on the links.

Its a 1" tweeter, 4" mid, and 6.5" low in each door. Thats 3 speakers, through a 3 way crossover (still at 4ohm).

But I may have to do the amp too.

sorry surf... that's a single 6.5" speaker and a SINGLE 2-way kit. The key here is the 2-way kit is fed by a single signal into a crossover - which then in turn seperates into diff speakers. Hence 4 wires feeding concept.

You could do away with the MBQ xover and drive it directly with the ford junk - but you'd probably ruin the quarts. If you're going to spend that coin on speakers and modify the 8" hole to fit the 6.5" do it right. Get an amp to feed them properly and while you are at it, see if you can mount the tweets in the sails rather than the door.

It never ceases to amaze me that audio designers shove tweeters shooting at people's bellies! Sheesh!

Cheers

wait wait.

the 6.5" is an ADD ON woofer, designed to be added on the 4" component set. If you read the manuel on it, it is connected to the x-over that comes with the component set. It essentially turns the 4" comonent set (2 speakers) in to a three way set. Thats what it is advertised as.

Yeah I skimmed through the manual and didnt see that. Looking at the picture of the crossover unit, I don't see how it could be converted to a three way setup?

Anyone else care to chime in?

From the PCE-164 (6.5" add a woofer) manuel-

"The Add-a-Woofer systems PCE 164 and RCE 164 are an addition to both ranges, and provide you with a simple means of making an optimised 3-way system out of your PCE 210 or RCE 210. For the other systems of these ranges (PCE 213; PCE 216; RCE 213 and RCE 216) the 164 provides additional bass power. NOTE: the end-stage must be able to take 2 ohms. The system demonstrates a deep separation
frequency below actual speech level, and therefore ensures very good front-staging, since the speech range is reproduced by the mid-range speaker. The bass extension has been so developed that the tonal matching of the basic system does not change. Please also note the general installation instructions of your MB QUART Premium or Reference system."

I am not very car audio savy....so any help is appreciated.

From your exerpt it seems as if the add as sub is done by wiring the woofer in parallel. Wiring in parallel will change the ohm rating of the setup from 4ohms (fairly standard) to 2ohms. You would definately need to make sure your amp could run a 2ohm load stable. I don't think that setup could be run off the regular head unit without seperate amplification.

Search google for series and parallel wiring for speakers. You will find a ton of diagrams on the topic.

the stock stuff may not be far off. If I remember correctly the subs are already dual voice coil 2 ohm per coil.
