From the pic it sure looks like a single DIN unit to me with the cheesy flip-out screen. I sure hope they used a "sample" picture!

Mobilemag posted a picture of the AVIC-X1R, the latest navi unit to hit the UK market. Its a single DIN unit without the HDD feature.
Pioneer UK webpage: AVIC-X1R

The latest Japanese models with HDD and integrated tilting monitor require double DIN space. The only HDD unit that is a single DIN has to have the monitor as a seperate component (AVIC-HRV02.

Pioneer Japan webpage: HDD Navi lineup

The single DIN Japanese Navis with the flip-up screens do not support HDD. They support the DVD option only.

IMHO, I think it is safe to assume that the Z1 is a double DIN unit.

The Z1 has not come out yet and probably won't until February or March 06'.

The D1 may still have that $300 rebate so if you can get an authorized dealer to sell it to you for the online street price (around $1000) and he gives you a retail receipt you can maybe get it for $700 after the rebate.

The reasons I would go with the Z1 are:
- HDD based Navi, may hold more Navi info and better/easier to expand/renew the data
- AI built-in, first version maybe bugy, but do you trust Pioneer will issue updates?
- Voice recognition, not just voice guidance.
- It will hopefully have 4V line level outs instead of the 2V the D1 has now.
- Bigger screen, 7 inch instead of the 6.5 inch on the D1.

Don't forget 10gigs of memory just for music. I think this might be where my income tax return goes.
