Lets see your in dash reciever with nav
Just started looking. I don't really want to spend alot but want a decent tuner with nav. What do you have? How do you like it? How much did you pay? Where did you buy from... link?
Thanks for looking
Thanks for looking
In my opinion, not spending a lot, but getting something decent hardly works...
I got a Kenwood DNX9240bt which is quite nice (while not perfect).
I was particularly keen on the high resolution screen, DivX playback from USB (as well as DVD), having good brands behind it (Kenwood Audio, Garmin Navigation, Parrot Bluetooth) and finally the ability to connect USB+iPod at the same time.
It was around $2k at the time, but keep in mind that I am in Europe and most things are considerably more expensive.
For a quick look at the interface you can look at
Considering my experience, I would recommend to have a look at the current top of the range model DNX9980HD. It's being sold for only $999 in the states and seems to have pretty much everything you could possibly want. New features like ODB integration seem really sweet. I just wish I could hack it for use in Germany (the equivalent German Model is $1700).
Other than that the Sony XNV-770bt appears very very tempting at only $640 (unbelievable - the equivalent German XNV-L77bt is $1300).
I have been using portable TomTom navigations for years (in Europe, the US and Australia) and genuinely believe that they make the best Nav's out there. Having their product integrated in a multimedia headunit is just sweet.
As a matter of fact - you should probably get that one and work with me on trying to get German maps on it... If so, I'll buy it in the States too
Edit to further elaborate on my "not perfect" Statement RE: Kenwood.
It does everything that is advertised, so that's pretty great.
A few things that annoy me (and you would have to find whether they would be a dealbreaker to you, and checker whether those issues even still exist on the newer models):
- Boot up time is quite slow (about 30-40 seconds between starting the car and music starting to play, important however: Rear-View Camera works instantly!)
- You cannot change tracks while looking at the navigation screen, unless you're using a remote control (infrared or steering wheel).
- Coverart on iPod takes about 7-9 seconds to load. While the coverart is loading, you cannot change tracks. In my video, you'll see that I have 5000+ tracks on my ipod and oftenly just listen on random and skip through. Having to wait 7 seconds for it to go to the next track can be quite annoying
- Navigation 'Nag Screen' ("driver takes responsibility blah blah blah") cannot be disabled, so everytime you restart the car, you'll have to click accept before it'll show the map (as seen in the video).
- Garmin Navigation is just not as good (usability) as TomTom, but that's my opinion and from reading through US Forums I believe many americans will disagree and love Garmin.
Edit2: It appears that the Sony doesn't have great reviews. While possibly having the better Navigation, the overall package doesn't seem as good.
I also have some first hand experience with Pioneers, but am not excited about them. The Interface oftenly looks quite poor (like on a cheap $300 unit), they have similar speed issues (particularly to boot up), thend to crash occasionally and are a pain to modify.
So in my personal opinion:
- Kenwood 9xxx Range: Can't really go wrong. Great overall package and good value for money.
- Sony XNV- (TomTom) Range: Has it's advantages, but also it's downsides. Possibly worth a try if you're on a budget.
- Pioneer Avic-Fxx Range: Good product but value for money is arguable. I would prefer Kenwood.
- Cheap Units (Jensen, Dual, Boss): Don't do it. Just don't. As we say in Germany: Those who buy cheap, buy twice.
Edit3 (You can tell I really care for this topic):
I looked for DNX9980 Videos:
, (I counted 7 seconds here)...
(I counted 26 seconds).
The Sony starts in 6 Seconds, so that's a big advantage...
Just checking out the
now (should be pretty much the same, just 1" smaller) than the XNV-770
Sooo: Long Story short: Most people will probably recommend what they own, so I'd suggest to have a play with some units in a shop.
The Sony Reviewer actually posted in his second video:
, so Kenwood is worth the extra in his opinion...
It's not an easy decision to be made. Looking forward to other people's opinions.

wow, i never thought about one of these units and didnt know anything about them, but with all that info, now i can see what its all about and learned some things. cool stuff, good thread
Im actually in the maket for this too. What about Pioneer, like the AVIC-X930BT? Also I was wondering about some of the midrange pioneers that are not Nav specific, but are nave ready for an iphone or what not like the 6300BT or p4300 DVD
Here is what I got.
Its a JVC KW NT30HD.
I spent about a grand when it came out. I could not be happier with it. I have an iPhone so its perfect for iPhone users, others, not so much. Here is a pic of my son watching underdog on it.
