Exactly. No need for 3G or data plans for the radio.

And if you have a phone that can be turned into a hotspot, there's your internet "on screen", and much cheaper than any carputer i've seen around... I guess I could be doing this and just get a used one once they go down in the 400-500 range.

I use my iPad in the car with a MyFi wireless hotspot on Verizon... works great. Plus it's available wi-fi for other devices. The Slingbox iPhone app streams live TV and allows access to my DVR. The only downside is that the non-3G iPad doesn't have GPS. The Maps app does a pretty good job using cell signal to track, but it's far from perfect. I do have in-dash GPS in my vehicles, plus a Droid with turn-by-turn, so no GPS in the iPad isn't an issue here.

With all the streaming radio available, I'm seriously considering dropping the satellite radio subscriptions.

My carPC cost around $450. The simplicity of wiring the ipad compared to most other solutions is worth the option to some. This is a great build though and looks great.

Not everyone is able to put together a carPC for that price. Getting a good non-glare touchscreen it's about $500, so it's not as easy to pull those prices. I'm thinking that in a year or so, iPads should be around that price or less, which like you said, with how simple the wiring is, makes this a worthy option.
