I talked to a tinting company today, that is very well respected. They do mostly European and exotic vehicles.
Apparently...as of this year....Ford switched to putting a hard rubber where the doors seal. And the windows going up and down can scratch tinting. this is the same on BMW's and Mercedes.
The guy told me that their solution is putting felt over the rubber...to protect the window tint. He quoted $80 for both doors to do this, and said they are the only company in San Diego that is doing it right. It will look very nice, and not interfere with anything else.
Has anyone else heard of this?

The hard strip I think he is reffering to is the outside lip, but the window does not come into contact with that. I was checking that very thing out last night and the surfaces that the window are in contact with are soft rubber.
I have not had that problem. Windows were tinted the day after I got the car and now I have over 4,000 miles on the car. No scratches yet. Besides, tint has a warranty so according to the place that installed it, if the tint should get scratched and is not the result of something I have done, they will replace it for free.
mine are scratched already, 3500 miles
tint the first day i got it
it is the rubber on the inside of the window that is causing the scratches
all you have to do is get one piece of sand in between that and the window and -----------, one big scratch
mosty at the frt of the window on both sides for me
oh well, small price to pay for a black car to look 10 times better.

Yea, I got scratches on mine too . One very noticeable one on the passenger door and a few tiny ones on drivers side, so I had it re tinted. But I have a gut feeling that as soon as I roll down the windows it will happen again.
Id hate to have to check for sand every time a roll down the windows. :bang:
Thanks for the info, I will definitely be contacting them to see if the felt thing will be a fix for this issue. If its sand that is causeing it I dought felt will help  I will probably get it done if it does it again and hopefully the tint place foot the bill since they have to replace it for free if it scratches anyways.

Wow .. I just thought I was super unlucky. Cruised with the windows down on
our one 60+ degree day and got a big scratch right when I put the window up on the driver's door. Sure enough a piece of grit got between the glass and moulding.

my best friend tints windows for a living....has advised that he can not warranty side window any more on 05 mustangs due to the new channel that the window rides in.... the rubber inner trim has no kind of protective (felt) lining like other mustangs in the past...also the new mustang guides primarily on the inner weatherstrip...the outter belt mlding isn't the issue.
according to him the newer thunderbird has had the same issues / same w/ the newer lincoln ls model....looks like ford had to use some new technology on the cars which have the windows that role up 1/2 inch when you shut the door
