The Dreaded Sub Pop

I wired in my head unit using Taco Bill's instructions...in fact I have the same exact head unit he installed. Instead of using a voltage regulator, I wired in a resistor. I don't get the sub pop when I turn the unit on, but when I turn the unit off or switch between radio presets. Has anyone else had or heard of this issue? I've triple checked everything v. the install instructions. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
