Door Subs
Josh , after I posted I googled Kicker grilles and found them and order a set. I already have the Shelby Kickers you show in pictures , but I really liked the way the grille looks on yours and decided to change them. When the grilles arrive I'm going to see if they will work on the Shelby's , the web site I got them from said they would work on other 8" kickers. Also , the Shelby's do fit without any modification other than cutting off the plug on the speaker wires to connect them. If the grilles work on the Shelby's I'll return the CVT8's ...
Nope. They're dinky, size of a paperback book.
Unfortunately there is no cheap or easy way with this.
These CVT8s, at least mine (they did update them, so maybe changed other things) are too deep for the door sub plastic pockets, requiring cutting out a fair chunk of plastic (not visible after install) to get the magnet to fit.
The Mustang specific Kickers might be different -- I'd think they would be if they say they're drop in. But you won't be happy with the stock amps powering them -- guarantee you. The speakers need much more power to get them to move.

Even with the Kicker 4.1 amp, it doesn't feel like they get enough power. I installed the kit for convenience, but will probably end up swapping the Amp and or Speakers done the line for more/cleaner power.

) I wanna see if I can make them work with my 12 inch sub it produces deep lows but no mid bass so I wanna see if I can down power them a bit for that extra kick. Yours had two 8 inch kickers right? Mine only came with one and it's a 500 thought that was odd I popped the one I had
Did the grilles fit over the Shelby Kicker subs?
The Shelby Kicker door subs come with an adapter ring to fit the door enclosure, that might be the difference.

Yes they do fit ... You're right about the adapter ring , it moves the shelby's out about 1/2" further than the OEM ones were and that's why they fit without any modification. I also trimmed the OEM ring so it would cover the lower part ...
That makes more sense, and cool usage of the stock surround. Mine already stick out quite a ways, constantly bumping my foot on them -- how thick is that adapter ring?
I probably shoulda made my own when I first installed them, too lazy. They work fine the way they are now, and not too obvious they don't fit perfectly.

I gotta say, I don't like the black one nearly as much as the silver ones I have...
But maybe that's just because the grilles are silver? I think I'd paint them black to match.

Josh , I didn't measure the adapter ring , but I think it's 3/8" or 1/2" thick. Even with the Shelby grille it stuck out further than the OEM grille and with the new Kicker grille it's even a little further out.
Initially I had thought about getting the Kicker grilles powered coated black to match my SHR window switch plates and door lock pockets. But once I got the grilles and installed them , I liked the way the silver compliments the grey on my seats and decided to leave them as is ...

Ok, so I am getting ready to swap out my door subs and they are going to be getting a lot of power. Ive been reading through this thread and far as the shelby modified kickers is the performance as good as the other subs that everyones been using, or is it worth the hastle to make some mods and go with the kickers/pioneers, ect.?
Does anyone know if it would be simple enough to use the Shelby/Kicker upgrade with a different amp?
I know they are set up to use stock plugs, but I imagine they could be converted easy enough. The little 4.1 so tiny it can't have that much juice in it, plus the customization is severely limited in tweaking all the settings.

I've decided to replace my MB Quart 5 channel (4 channels to the door and speaker shelf 6x8s, one to the 12" subwoofer in the trunk) and 2 channel (to the door 8" Kickers) with a JBL 6 channel amp, and pull out the subwoofer. It's a slightly dinged MBQuart 12", in a Qlogic custom enclosure, carbon fiber covering. The enclosure is quite nice, will probably put it up for sale soon.
Hope to save some significant weight, as my car is becoming more track dedicated the more I get into road racing. I'm sure the sub panel mounting board, the massive amps, and sub are adding to my 3600lb weight on the scale last weekend (base Mustang weight for the TTB class is less than 3400lbs). But as I pulled out the factory amps, and don't want to rely on just the headunit, am going after a smaller amp, the JBL should be about half the size and weight of the 5 channel one I have now. And hopefully can find a way to attach it that's not 10-15lbs of particle board.
You pulled out the stock amps, then used the stock wires to feed through the new wires?

Where is a good spot to mount a 4 channel in these cars?
I'd like to figure a way to run a 4 channel to my Shelby/Kicker door speakers/subs and rear deck speakers, and keep the self powered Kicker sub somehow.
You can potentially mount a small amp under the seats. I ended up running everything to the trunk, mounted amps there, then wires to the front, and spliced into the old stock wires at the old stock amp locations.
Was a major PITA, for what it's worth...
