Dimmer wire in factory radio harness...

Does anyone know which wire this is?

I put in a Pioneer HU and the kit only came with one harness adaptor for the main harness. As anyone who has replaced their HU knows, there are two harnesses coming out of the back of the factory radio. The dimmer wire on the adaptor is not correct and I can't find a wiring diagram that lists which wire is the dimmer wire. I have the feeling that it is probably part of the second harness and will require another splice.

Has anyone been there and done that that could help me out before I butcher something?

The dimmer circuit in the Mustang's factory harness is a pulse code modulated type and will not function with the dimmer type in your Pioneer radio. Do not try to connect this to your radio-no damage will occur-it just plain does not work.

You can't use the one in the wiring harness. You have to use the headlight switch for the dimmer line. I have the Pioneer AVIC-Z1 and this is the inly way to make it work. Hope this helps.

I hooked my Pioneer head unit into the wiring harness for the A/C controls ... I think it was a grey/white wire on the back of the main harness.

It doesn't work 100% ... as you dim the interior lights the Pioneer lighting begins to flicker instead of dim. I just turned auto-dim off on the Pioneer Head unit ... so although it doesn't dim with the panel lights ... at least it now does light-up at night even if powered off when the headlights are on ...

Thanks for the info guys!

It sounds like it may be more trouble than it's worth to try and make it work. Thanks for giving me the heads-up before I started clipping wires in the factory harness

Their is an adapter harness from crutchfield that allows everything to work correctly including dimmers.

I used the adaptor from Crutchfield and the dimmer wire on the adaptor does not connect to the dimmer wire on the factory harness. So, even with that adaptor the dimmer does not work.

Like I said earlier, you HAVE to use the headlight switch to make this work. Trust me, we tried several other ways before making it work. Wire it into the headlight switch., you'll be glad you did

Heat Dimmer switch Question

Hello, I'm getting ready to install my AVIC-z1 soon and wanted to ask:

Is the wire that will be tapped into right behind the switch on the underside of the driverside dashboard? And if so, what color might that wire be? THanks, trying to gather answers to all of my questions before starting the install.

Bump, anyone have more info on what wire behind the headlight switch needs to be tapped? Needing to do this soon before a roadtrip, as without it, my carputer won't switch the nav maps into night mode, and day mode is way too bright when driving down dark highways.

Give me a sec and I'll see if I can check which one I used....

Okay, I used the Yellow/green stripe wire on the top corner! That should do it!

Good Luck.

The blue / yellow wire on the plug that goes to the hazard switch also works. It's closer then the headlight switch and you have to unplug it anyway to remove the outside panel around the head unit. Double check it with a voltmeter to see that it goes from 0V to 12V when the light switch is turned on....I used it on my Kenwood DNX7100 and it works great.

Perfect, thanks guys. I'll probably have the dash apart this weekend to get this fixed, along with one other issue on the carputer.
