Chrome door grommets
Chrome door grommets
The grommets i used were from a 09 Taurus. Cost me $5 for both. I then had them chromed for $60. To get them to fit, the existing hole for the door lock pin had to be widened - no big deal.
I like the end result.

Looks pretty good (and I always applaud DIY projects), but that's a lot of money for what it is. SHR doorlock pins are like $16.00.
If you mean the one that surrounds the pin, I didn't like the look of that much chrome. This was the best way to get some chrome accenting without it being too much.
Also, I liked that this finishes up the hole that's there.
I almost hate to chime in, because I don't want anyone to be uspet, but 60.00 seems like an awful lot of money to have them plated, even if (and that's a big if) they were charging an "aggravation" fee for doing a one-off job like that. I know we get "production" rates for our products, but something like that to be fair is 3.00 ea max. I have paid for custom work to be done before on my 73 Mach 1, and yes, I paid way more than I should have as well, so it's not like I'm not guilty of the exact same thing (700.00 for hood hinges and some other misc. underhood stuff) but I wouldn't do it twice, that's for sure.
For anyone else contemplating this until we release our tru-billet replacement pockets, I would suggest looking at the bezels from say a 71-73 Mustang, available thru vendors like NPD, which would be able to be adapted to do the same thing, and for maybe 10.00 or so total cost. Just a thought.
BTW - the end result does look nice

I know, I know - lots of cash for such a little piece.
I was OK with this, though, in order to get the look I wanted. There wasn't anything out there that looked right for me. I wasn't aware of the grommets from a 73, though.

I suppose you wouldn't have to do anything to the grommets, though. Just leave them black, and that would still finish the hole very nicely - just not with the contrast.

Jim,
The thing with the 71-73 grommets was that they were already finished... let me go look...
http://npd.dirxion.com/WebProject.as...Code=mtg09flx#
Look at page 26, they are listed for 2.75 ea.
Again, it's a nice mod, and I've done the same thing with other pieces before so I know where you were at and all, so it's not meant as anything negative. On the contrary, I think it is tastefully executed, just trying to help anyone else who wnats to do it be able to duplicate the effort for a lot less cash outlay.
Once I did some of my underhood pieces, alternatives besides me just machining them from scratch came onto the market, and of course, I was left holding the bill for stuff that no longer had the value I had invested in them. Oh well, sometimes that's how this goes

I know it was more than most are willing to pay, but as I said before, I was OK with it, since it gave me the look i wanted.
Besides, I saved some money on my replacement dash, so I had to spend the money SOMEWHERE
.
Cheers
