You not only have to cut it out, you have to apply the double sided tape in exactly the same pattern. Unless this stuff sells for $10 a roll I'd suggest picking up a kit off ebay or something. I got mine several years ago for under $200.

If you're talking about things like the 3M product, they are nice and have their place (I've used them in our office decorations) but to be honest a kit more like what we offer is much easier to use and install and will hold up much better than if you try and DIY. Our kits are real CF, and have a flexible urethane clear on top, as well as having the 3M tape already set to go. Not really trying to sell you on a kit, just saying that what you're thinking about if I understand it right is going to be a lot of effort and the end result will at best be on par with a commercially available kit that will save you a lot of time, and not be price-wise all that different.
I've done what you're talking about on cars in the past, and if a kit were available for the car in question, I would've bought it...
