alternate location for trunk release switch
alternate location for trunk release switch
Ref: Silverhorse Racing S197-805
I like the look of this kit. To me it looks like a factory install.
I have been to several websites and seen customer pictures where
the switch was mounted on the headlight switch panel. The only
instructions I could find, were for installing in the glove box. Have
any of you installed the switch on the dash by the headlight switch?
If so, could you give me some instructions? I know I could run the
wires over to the passenger side and use the instructions for the glove
box to the SJB or the door sill plate. Just wondering it there is a better way.
Thanks.

Years ago I had a '98 Maxima that had the trunk release on the door panel right where my elbow would hit. Pissed me off as I can't tell you the number of times I'd hit it in traffic. I could see the same problem on the dash by the headlight switch - fumbling around at night hitting the button by mistake. Could be just me with Murphys Laws. Just my 2 cents - I'd put it out of sight and mind like where Silver Horse suggested. Lot less likely to hit it there.
I understand. My 98 Stang had it in the glove box. My father's 06 Five Hundred has it on the dash next to the headlight switch. I know there are times when the key fob won't open the trunk. I have not had time to take inventory of the when it will still open and be a possible problem. I drive with my lights on 98 percent of the time, so I'm not worried about hitting it by mistake. But if it were to become a problem, moving it to the glove box and inserting a 3/4 inch blank-off plug would be no problem.
1) Remove the headlight switch and drill as needed.
2) Lengthen the longer of the two wires and safely route as needed.
3) Ground the shorter wire to a convenient ground on the driver's side.
4) Install is remainder of standard notes.

I may have to look into this kit.
My '98 had it stock as does my '01. My '06 nada! I really liked the convenience of having it in the glove-box, though I always thought it would be better if it were closer to the driver side, like maybe in the center console?

Hooked mine up in the center console with a 3 switch console from SOS

About 24" of white wire and about 8" of black, I grounded the black, ran white to loom under pass kick and spliced into white / pink tracer, both wires to $3 NO pushbutton switch above GB opening in wide lip, towards left side.
Done.
Done.
This is a simple mod and originally I used a momentary contact push button. Since I have a convertible, there is only one safe place to put it, in the glove compartment. This is the same location as in the older cars. But this proved to be a problem because the glove compartment door kept pressing the button accidentally. Eventually, I replaced it with a trunk release button form an SN95 Mustang. I bought it for $3 at a junk yard. Attached are a set of instructions for the original installation but it will work with the button from the older mustangs:
