I had my eye on a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, but I'm not sure if the 275/40 is to wide for the rim.

275/40's usually need a 9"+ rim width. The factory's
are 17x8, so no.

I agree. I've seen 275's on an 8" rim, and it was scary. Also, keep in mind a 275/40-17 tire will be about 1-1/2" shorter than stock.
