Question What grit sandpaper to sand body part?

I just received the spoiler that I bought on ebay for 10.51(!) + $25 shipping (not a bad deal) and I want to sand it down, prime it, and paint it flat black. What grit sandpaper should I use to sand it down? I have 600 grit but that doesn't seem to even make a scratch in the clearcoat/paint. I also have 80 grit but that seems too rough. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
chris

More elbow grease, (or a machine). You just want to make the paint adhere. Or use a prepsol to clean it, and don't bother. Worst case... you try again.

I wouldn't try to take the other paint off.... especially if it's factory paint. It will make a great base coat. (assuming that wasn't alredy the path you were headed down. Just take the finish off of the clear coat... try some 400.... and rough it up, then smooth it over a little with the 600.... then you'll be ready for paint... after you clean it, of course.

Cool thanks. I did make some progress yesterday before I had to go to work and you're right, that factory paint is nice and smooth.
