Two Tone Look?

I have been changing thngs on the car this year and going for a two tone look with Windveil Blue and Black. This year I put in SHR side flush mount louvers. The paint match on them was not good and by the time I figured it (after installing them), I could no longer return them, so I am stuck with them now. In osme light they seem okay, but I do notice the difference. I purchased a set of Saleen flush window replacement covers and now I am thinking of painting them either a flat black or semi-gloss black and use them instead of the SHR louvers. I removed the SHR louvers yesterday, as I had a seal fialure on them, as they were not prepped properly, so this gave me a chance to play with the look.

Here are a couple pictures of the different looks. Which would be better? Should I maybe get the SHR louvers repainted? If so, how difficult would that be, seeing that they were clear coated and it would be very hard to sand the clear down in certain places on the inside of the louver.

I am even entertaining the idea of sapping out the Roush spoiler with a pre-painted flat black version I found for sale. It was supposedly from the 2007 Roush Outlaw edition and is a surplus item. I think it would look good, but what would you think?

Here is a better picture of the car to see what it looks like now.

I'm normally not a fan of the covers not matching, but on WB and w/ your black fuel door and black tint, the black covers look pretty **** good!

my first set of SHRs I didnt prep right (didnt read the instructions- 100% my fault) and they popped loose too...decided to wetsand/polish while they were out(I painted them myself had a little orange peel) and promptly cut thru a edge...repainting will be a bear, so I just ordered another set (prepaints this time)...still think these are the best single look changer second only to wheels out there...
with my old set, I still hope to repaint them sometime, but what I'm thinking (due to near impossible remasking issues) is to airbrush the pockets in black, fading out to color again(like a dirty exhaust port on a P51 mustang if you know what I mean) I think it might look kinda neat. I got a couple scrap pieces from Marcello at SHR to play with too, but still havent touched them- trying to think of a way to make a drop in 'plug' for the pockets, then repaint the outer part/airbrush the inner...painting those pockets with a normal touchup gun is a bear- blows back, etc...dont know if I'll be able to save mine or not either...they look great on these cars, but nature of the beast makes painting a big challenge- I'm already pretty sure I'll just end up ordering more prepaints for the other 2 cars eventually...but the wife dont want me pulling the windows out of hers, even though she likes the way they look too

Sean,

Hopefully you received my response via e-mail about the correct install procedure yesterday I did not see a response back, but the problem was how the adhesion promoter was used..

On the color - what about going to a matte black look? Easier to paint, and would go with the rest of your black trim. Still gives you the visibility as well. Just a thought.

Hey Marcello,

Yes I got your email...Thanks for the quick reply...Hope the weed whacker survived!

I am contemplating the black louver look also. I am just painting the Saleen window deletes right now, so I can put them in, and then I will figure out what to do with your louvers. I like the flush mount louvers alot and would rather have them installed, but I don't want to reinstall them the proper way, and then try to take them out to get painted.

Any way I could get a set of the paint overlays, so that if/when I go the paint route, I have something to cover them?

Thanks,

Sean

Here is a flat black SHR louver that I forgot i saw at a local show recently

Here is my latest try at the two-tone look. I painted the one side with Dupli-Color Flat Black. The finish is pretty good.

While I'm a huge fan of the SHR louvers, I'm personally not a fan of them being used for contrast (two-tone). The thing that makes the SHR louvers the best on the market is the way they blend in and appear 'part of' the car. They just don't work for me the other way.

I came across some picture of a guy that did a two tone SHR louver. His painter first painted the louver all flat black, and then he painted the exterior parts the same as the body color. The only downside this guys states, is that there is no clear louver sections anymore, as they have all been painted over. I guess it would be the same as a window louver cover.
I think it would be cool looking, as you would get that two-tome look, but yet the louver would flow with the body color.

If you want to go the repaint route, then yes, I am happy to get some masks on the way for you no problem. I like the red one posted above, looks nice.

I somewhat agree - the reason for the whole flush-mount thing besides better visibility and lack of them being "stuck out" was for the OE look. Now that said, they tend to work best PTM, although the original concept did include just painting the edge black (like the glass) and leaving the entire center unpainted. Nobody's ever done that though that I have seen outside of our very first prototype, as most people looking for contrast go to black.

The reason we contrast them on our cars is just for visual impact and to go with the color on the rest of the car. #05=Vista Blue, #10= Redfire (carbon too), just trying different things to give people ideas, just like how we did the hood on our '10, I haven't seen anyone else do - yet
