Saleen Scenic Roof
I was poking around somewhere, and found this article that looks basically like a press release from Saleen talking about "Cool Tops" for their coupe.

The part I was most interested in was:
Is it just me, or does that sound like CDC's Glassback? I haven't been able to find more about this, even on Saleen's site. Does anyone know more? While I don't think competition would drop the price (firstly, I don't think either company has given a price, and secondly, Saleen doesn't believe in low prices), it would at least be good to have a choice, where one might be slightly better/different than the other.
Edit:
And after much more Google work, I have found my answer.

Gallery link at the bottom of that page does a good job of showing it off. $3,999 though... ouch!
Edit2:
After seeing the frontpage of TMS, I think that must be where I found it the first time, and just forgot. So what does everyone think? Any advantage over the CDC? Will either be available, really?

The part I was most interested in was:
The Cool Tops line begins with the 2006 S281 coupe, with the new, sleek Saleen Scenic Roof. Surrounding all the vehicle's passengers, the Scenic Roof gracefully extends from the front windshield to the back window. The Scenic Roof captures nature's unsurpassed beauty by protecting its passengers from the weather's elements, all while allowing them to experience the seasons in full bloom.

It replaces just the sheet metal top, no support is lost and actually some stiffness has been reported due to the more solid piece being emplaced between the framework.
I like them but I have no idea if their is any difference between the two. We will have to wait for more info to come out as well. They are pricey but I would probably still consider it for a hybrid Mustang. By hybrid I mean a coupe and vert crossed....

I think its a cool idea, but too much $. What if lightning hit the roof? Or what about if you rolled the car?

As for rolling the car, I guess I can't disagree with that, except that it doesn't look like it has rollbars anyways, so instead of having the metal crunch you'd have the glass crunch  Either way, hosed again

As for the price... yea... insanity. I am hoping that the CDC Glassback will be much more like $2K, which is still a bunch of money. I can't afford it either way, but "one day" I definitely want one.
Lightning? It would just hit the metal to the sides of the roof, except that you're more insulated from the road (by your tires) than the powerline next to the road, so that's not a problem. If it did hit your car, glassback or not, I think you're hosed smile.gif

I bet Saleen is using the CDC glassback, why spend the money on development when someone else has already done it for you?

Saleen's is quite different actually... In the close-up photos of the CDC, you can see there's a texture in the tint they use on the glass, where as the Saleen is clear. The CDC one has that full width LED strip which is quite nice, but it also has a step-down where it meets the window. The Saleen top on the other hand is completely slick.
I think overall the Saleen top looks much more OEM, but with the CDC you'll be saving a good bit of money... I'm not clear on whether the Saleen price of 4k is installed or parts only, and I don't know if it'll be available for DIY install.
As for getting struck by lightning, they did tested this mythbusters style on a TopGear episode in England a while back. One of the presenters was in a Golf that was zapped by simulated lightning. It just passed around the shell of the car then sparked to the ground... no problems for the guy inside other than he felt it was "quite scary" and the car even started up afterwards.

Wow, bet that is really nice to have in places where it gets 100+ degrees in the summer.........NOT

Hehe, it'll be no worse than any large sports coupe with front and rear windows that aim to the sky more than the road ahead, e.g. the stang. I sat in a "GTO" in about '03-'04 when they were first imported to the Middle East under the Chevrolet badge, and it was HOT in there.
The solution is a quality tint job... You can get window tints that selectively block IR and UV, while still being clear if you want... or dark if you prefer. The car feels cold in direct sunlight, and will stay cold for a long time after you shut it down.
I might order a spare headliner and try to figure out a way to make a retracting shade in it that follows the curve in the roof line, but only to block the sunlight on days when I could be feeling better and don't want bright light in my eyes. B)
With the right tint, I'm not worried about the temperature. Enough light is coming in the front and rear windows, and I live in one of the hottest places on earth.
