anyone think these would fit in place of the typical rubber gas caps found on most cars these days. I'm assuming the 2005 has the same flat black plastic one that most cars do now adays.

These won't fit. Take the 73, it's as big as the one on the rear of the 05. These were gas caps that went on the car and there were no doors over them. That's why they are so decorative.
