OEM Gt500 Spoiler vs Clone

I installed the "clone" GT500 spoiler a couple of weeks ago. I bought the pre-painted one off of Ebay for $180. I decided not to drill the two additional holes for the outside attachment screws...as did many others. The spoiler looks great...but without adding those extra two attachment screws...the 3M tape on the outside corners of the spoiler will not hold. I don't blame the spoiler because I chose not follow the recommended installation instructions. But...who wants to drill new holes in your car for a clone spoiler?

So...I decided to look at buying the OEM version. From what I understand the OEM version uses all four of the original attachment holes.

Here's a few questions for whoever owns one of the OEM spoilers.
Other than the original four attachment holes...how is it attached?
Does the OEM version also use 3M tape?
Is it easy to install and are you happy with it?

Hey Dave,

Call Dan at King Kollision...he put the OEM spoiler on his wife's car...he said it fit really well and is staying put...I haven't asked him lately, so I'm not sure if that's still the case.

Tape and bolts. The OEM spoiler has a metal brace that runs the length of the spoiler that prevents it from warping, or so I'm told.

It's a piece of cake installing it yourself. The most difficult part of the job will be removing the old two sided tape where the original spoiler was. Then again you would have to do that with the clone as well. After the surface is cleaned it is truly a "plug and play" installation.

I just installed the clone yesterday, also ordered from ebay at 180 bucks.

The corners sticked for about 3 hours, later the corners began to come up a bit.

However, a friend purchased the real deal 500 spoiler and the same thing happened! The only difference between mine and his that i could see was that he used 4 stock bolts and holes, but that made no difference to the corners because the stock bolts were all in the mid center anyway.

What do you think will happen if my corners are like that?

hmmm, he didn't overtighten the bolts did he? I say that because my corners havent come up yet and it's been on for a couple of months now.

I would imagine that the corners on yours will only stick up so much and that will be as far as they go. With the tape and bolts holding it, it should be plenty strong enough to stay put.

Make sure you clean the parts and use adhesion promotor for the tape, it won't go anywhere. Shouldn't have to crank down on the bolts too much either.

Hi Dan,

That is interesting that both the clone and the OEM spoilers are having the same issue. It makes me wonder how it is done at the factory. I was all set to pull the clone off and buy an OEM spoiler until you said that. Now I’m not sure. I don't think anything will happen because of these corners sticking up a little, but it sure is annoying. I wanted to have stripes installed but not until I get this spoiler thing worked out. I don’t want to pay more for a factory model if it’s going to do the same thing. I can’t believe all those guys who own GT500’s would be driving around with that problem and not notice it. I think more research is needed before I do anything.

Hey Dan...thanks for the tip! Will do! I guess I should have researched a bit more before buying that spoiler in the first place. My wife chewed me out good about that. She told me to spend a little more money and get it done right the first time.
WELL OKAY...she asked for it!

There are some people on this forum that bought the same spoiler as we did and had no corner issue. I guess it is just luck...but for $180.00 shipped and painted, the corners dont bother me too much. I am a student, so money is an issue.

Good luck

Yes, someone PLEASE take a picture of what this actually looks like. People have been talking about this problem on the GT500 knock-offs forever and no one has produced a picture yet. I think we're all curious to see how bad this really is, if it's noticable or not.

I installed the clone last week... no issues at all. Love the product and paid $150 at the spoilerstore painted & shipped. Can't beat that deal.

Here are some pic's. I'm not a photographer...but I think you can get the idea. The spoiler looks great...but if you look closely...you'll see the tape separating from the trunk lid on the ends.

Just curious, what did you clean the tape area with before you installed the spoiler? I washed the entire area with mild dish detergent and then wiped it down again with alcohol 2 times before installing. Its been on for around 3 weeks now with no issues so far.

Sorry for crap quality but here are the pics... you can see a little tape gap on corners, but still overall quality does not suffer...

I basically did the same. Washed with soap and water...than cleaned it with alcohol. It stuck pretty good until I took it out on a hot and sunny day. The adhesive on the tape was really soft and no longer stuck. With the car in the cool garage...it will stick again for a little while. The problem is that the tape is not strong enough to hold down the corners on its own. The shape of the spoiler does not exactly conform to the trunk lid. The tape will always have to fight against the upward pull of the spoiler. That's why the manufaturer decided to add the two outside attachment points. I heard from someone that the earlier models did not have those additional attachment points. If I had drilled those holes and added those extra screws...I would not be having this issue. BUT...I don't want to drill any holes in my trunk lid...so I decided to look at the OEM model instead to see if it has the same issue. I'm still lokking into it.
