how do you take the stock pony off?
how do you take the stock pony off?

click on additional info for the instructions
the other is to remove the radiator cover ( as shown above , then remove the two 10 mm bolts on the top of the upper part of the bumber cover (the thin part that runs up on the inside of each headlight) then pull the grill out to gain access to the back of the emblem, pop off the retainers and pins on the factory emblem ( if you ever want to re-use the chrome one, put it back on w/ two sided 3m tape, thats how mine is attached) then simply install the new pony in the grill, use a small socket to push the fasteners down over all 4 pins securely. ...either way , its a farily easy thing to accomplish even for the mechanically challenged.

In terms of removing the Pony its challenging to remove the clips that hold it to the grille without snapping the thin plastic posts coming from the pony itself. In my limited experience the odds of removing the retaining clips without snapping the posts isn't very good. My suggestion... get a roll of good 3M double-sided trim tape to use to re-attach the Pony.

Hmm... remove 2 10mm bolts? Removing the GT grille must be different from removing the V-6 grille. With the V-6 grille you simply remove the plastic radiator cover and then carefully unclip the front grille.

OK, now I'm a little concerned. I'm pretty careful about doing this kind of thing, but how gentle do I have to be to get the stock pony off? Any tips from those that have taken this off?

Removing the stock pony is easy... removing the clips without breaking the posts isn't. As Hireman has pointed out in other threads using trim tape to re-attach the Pony should work quite nicely.
