License plate placement - airflow problem?
License plate placement - airflow problem?
I wasn't sure whether to place this thread in the exterior or performance mods section, as it is a little of both. Anyhow, seeing as how I refused to drill holes in my bumper, and I simply can't stand what hanging a plate off of it does to the looks of our cars, I decided to tuck it inside the lower grill opening.
However, in this spot it is partially blocking off the heat exchanger that came with my Whipple, and was wondering if I should be concerned about reduced airflow? So far everything seems ok.
Here's what it looks like:

If I ever get pulled over for no plate, I intend to do the same thing, but w/ the GT bumper I won't have as good of visibility... not sure if it'd still meet the legal requirements in OH.
I did something similar with another car I used to own, on my old 2001 Neon ACR I folded the top inch or so of the plate back 90 degrees and used self tapping screws to drill into the back metal part of the bumper. I never got hassled for it, and I couldn't tell any adverse cooling effects from it. The main letters of the plate were visible as in the pic above, but you couldn't see the top or bottom 1-2" of the plate.
For the last few years though, I just haven't run front plates on several of my cars. My Bullitt and '08 GT have never had front plates on them, and I took the front plate bracket off my Miata when I bought it used. The only time I've ever gotten stopped here in Ohio for no front plate being mounted was when I had placed it in the windshield in another car. The Deputy Sheriff that pulled me over said it was a safety issue (I didn't normally run it like that) and just gave me a warning. I'm willing to take a couple of fines a year to keep my Mustangs free of front plates, but it hasn't happened so far. If I start getting hassled frequently for it (like some of you might who live in town), I'll consider an alternative, but for now they stay off the front of my car.

Why not get one of these hidden holders like I did? Stays hidden when needed and won't block your air flow if you're worried about that! I leave mine down all the time.
