What is the rule of thumb for tire and wheel width?

I found some 18x9 wheels I like.

I was thinking of putting:

255/55/18 on the front

and

285/60/18 on the rear

285mm is 11.2". Is 11.2" too wide for a 9" rim?

More then 2 inches wider starts to bulge quite a bit. An inch and a half to two inches in a good rule of thumb. IMHO.

Surfn, you you should be a tire expert by now with all the research you're doing on rims and tires.
I found the perfect hyper black rims that I'm putting on my black '05. Thruxtons by TSW. They are sold at Dicount tire and have 10" for the rear and 8's or 9's for the front. I'm going with 20's. I like the 18's but 20's look better and I don't race much. 295/30/20 on the back and 265/30/20 on a nine inch on the front. I think they look great.

Hope you find the combo you want.

I was looking at the Thruxtons also but the darker color doesn't seem to go well with the sonic blue. Also note how far the wheels extend out

If they stick out just a hair like in the pic then I think it looks ok. Any further and you'd have to jack up the rear end, cut the front coils and grow a mullet. Thanks for the link, I never checked out the TSW website. What do you think of those wheels Surfn?

I am putting 18x9 with 255/45's on the front and 18x10 with 295/40's on the rear. I think 285's on a 18x9 is going to bulge too much.

I should have my wheels on by next week. 18x9 f, 18x10 rear with 255/45-18 and 285/40-18 KDW2 tires. I'll post pics as soon as I have them. No snow in TN! (At least not until February, if at all).
