How I Deleted my Spoiler
#64
Another DIYer...definitely just a temp fix til, warmer weather and time allow me to get my ducktail and louvers painted. Not something I could see leaving long term but it'll do for now.
Sorry about the crappy pics, I'll take some better ones tomorow.

Looks great, Michael.
Yesterday I stumbled on some Permatex "liquid metal filler" that I had sitting in my garage. I would've used that for the holes had I remembered it.

Did the guys that used plugs sand them before using the touchup paint so that it would adhere better? Also did you use some sort of sealant on the underside of the trunk to prevent any leaks?

Thanks Dave, but that's probably not in the budget right now and even though I really like the look without the spoiler, I like having the option of ‘going back’ in a matter of minutes.
The tape got me thinking, though. Now I'm looking for a very thin piece of metal, preferably aluminum with very thin adhesive on the back. I will cut this into small circles like JohnMichael did with the tape. Paint them to match and stick them on. I think they will be less conspicuous than the plugs and less prone to indentations than the tape. It’s on my very long list of ‘things to do’.

I did sand the black plugs I got from Lowes before I put the touch up paint on (3 quick coats and 3 coats of clear) and used a touch of silicone underneath/inside the trunk.
Camera not working so these pics are from my cell.

I went to Lowe's to check out the plugs but forgot the size so I didn't grab any yet. Will go back now that I've written it down. I noticed they had some white ones the exact same style as well. Do you think these would look better painted since they are a lighter base color?

You don't need to drill anything...just go to the parts store instead and pick up the plugs they have there. I think they use them for pinning underliner to hoods. They are black plastic and you push them in the holes and they secure in place. I had to pick up a few different sizes (different shaft sizes but the same head size) but they worked fine.
I also used double-sided tape between the plug and the trunk. I cut a square of it, a little bigger than the head of the plug, then cut a circle in it the size of the plug's shaft. Then I stuck it to the underside of the plug...then carefully cut around the head of the plug...about 1/16" from the edge so that the tape would not show.
Then I put the plugs in the holes and pressed them down to secure them. From the underside of the trunk, I used silicone gasket maker to seal it for sure. Works perfectly till I get my bodywork done...and cost me like $7.

the reason water doesn't get in the trunk on the 99 is that the holes are on the outside edge so they are completely out of the trunk compartment and drain where water goes in the crevase anyway.

Michael, I would have traded your trunk lid for mine in a heartbeat. Read my post (#4) here:

Sorry man but I threw away the packaging. I just went in and told them I needed to plug holes and he pointed to where they were. I remember they were in a clear package with yellow. You shouldn't have any trouble finding them. I went to Advance Auto, but I'm sure you can get them anywhere.
