Help me make up my mind on a hood scoop.

How come if you search for "best hood scoop" it doesn't search for "best"?

Im trying to convince myself to get a hood scoop. But there are downsides to both sides. So right now, Im stuck in the middle.

If nothing mattered (money, resell, mods, etc) I would get a shaker hood. I really want a functional hood scoop. But the downside is, I have to cut a hole in my hood. And I would like to return my car to stock when I sell it. Which means, I will be selling my CAI, which would also have to have a hold cut into the airbox for the scoop duct. Which means the CAI could only be sold to someone who was going to put in a scoop.

So I've now been leaning towards a stick on scoop, which is cheaper, and doesn't cause any permanent damage. But the one thing I do not like about them is that they aren't real. No offense to those that have them already, but I kinda lost respect for them when I found out they weren't real. But now that I've started looking into them, only a small percentage of people would know, or care that it wasn't real.

So goods, and bads about both. Go with the permanent mods to your car at a higher price to say, yeah its functional. Or a cheaper temporary option to pass off as the real thing.

Do the majority of members here have one over the other? I've seen a lot of both. Any pros and cons that I didn't think of?

Most "stick-on" scoops still require you to drill a few holes. I wouldn't trust any that were just held on with 3M tape, then again, you still have to scuff up the paint where the tape sticks so I don't think you would plan on removing the scoop if you sold the car.

I guess I should comment on the shaker as well. Yes, they look really cool, but are they really functional. They connect to the stock air box, but if you plan on replacing it with a different CAI, then no, it will not be functional unless you get a CAI that it connects to and the air filter is completely sealed. This has been my struggle for quite some time now. Trying to figure out how to tie my shaker into my CAI so that it is a true, enclosed, system. Pointing a tube from the shaker towards an air filter is not what I consider ram air.

This helps. I guess I thought that the hood was just a stick on. I've heard that they recomend drilling holes. But I thought Ive seen some members say they just stuck it on with the tape. And I've always wondered about the drag that it would produce and how well it holds on because of it.

And I realize that the shaker is more aesthetics than functional. But at least if someone asks, i could say it does suck in air.

I'm torn.

I've got the Roush hood scoop, and if I had it to do over again I wouldn't put a scoop on the car. I have been looking into the Super Shaker, but it won't cover the holes I've made for the Roush, so to get the Super Shaker I've got to get a new hood, or a take-off hood. Even if I wanted a regular shaker I couldn't do it. If you are sure you want a fake scoop then do it. But its not easy to go back to no scoop or some other options.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the fake vs. real debate. Many classic muscle cars had fake scoops. Plus the "ram air" effect on a "real" scoop really only occurs at speeds over 100 mph and even then it's going to give you maybe a 1-2% boost in HP on a N/A engine (google search ram air and read up on it). If you like the look, I say go for it.

Do not get a scoop if you are planning to remove it. Save the money for something else.

I have a factory hood scoop that came with my car. I love the looks, but hate that it is not functional. It also collects water that rolls down the hood after I have finished drying it.

If I had to do it all over again I would have got the Shaker. If I had the money the Saleen Super Shaker. But again if you are planning on removing it for resell. Don't do it. Make sure all your mods are reversible if that is your plan.

A lot to think about. I think I'm swinging back to the shaker side. All I want it is for looks, but the coolness of knowing air can pass through it. The added power that it could produce if used properly would really mean nothing to me anyways. I wouldn't need it.

I don't plan on removing any scoop. Just thinking about resellablity. But I don't plan on selling my car anytime soon either. So maybe when that time comes, it won't really matter a whole lot. And if I get the Shaker, I'll let the next buyer decide what to do with the duct work.

I guess I'm not concerned about resale, 'cause I had no qualms about drilling into my hood. I just love the touch of aggressiveness the scoop adds. Yes, it's "fake" but I got a little something under the hood to back up the looks

I've had the shaker for two years now and still love it. I never noticed any increase in power when I had the stock airbox. After about a year I decided to trim it and get rid of alll the cheap plastic that was covering the engine bay. This is how it looks today.
