Yup, it is an easy thing to do and a bunch of members here have done this as well. I did that to mine a few years back before completely getting rid of the antenna. Just another tip, you don't have to dremel the ball off. The ball on the end will pop up even if you just hit it with a wrench, use a claw hammer, adjustable wrench, etc etc etc. You then cut your antenna to the height you want, push the ball back onto the end and tap it with a hammer. Repaint the antenna and you are good to go.

Another tip that was posted with this procedure a while back was to put a zip lock bag on the end where the tip is before knocking it off so you wouldn't have to hunt all over the garage floor looking for it. That worked great for me.

Correct, it is not a solid piece. Just pops on and off with a little force. What I found easy was just taking an adjustable wrench and open it up just a bit bigger than the antenna. Aim the end of the antenna (ball end) towards a box, then swiftly slide the wrench down the antenna and hit the ball. It pops off and lands in the box.

Yup, did that here too. And you can make it exactly the height you want. A little black paint will touch up any tool marks.
