Just wondering (other than price), what any negative effects of putting 275's all around on 18x9 rims are?

I want the same tire all around and will be going to an 18x9 tire size almost certainly.

Are there handling issues (ie. tire follows groves etc). Basically, 255's or 275's.

How will 275's look on 9" rims and will 275's stick out beyond the fenders on the 05?

Should work out just fine in my opinion. I have 285's on 18x9's on my '96 which is lowered, and I have no problems whatsoever. On the '05s, I'm thinking there is quite a bit more room.

 

As long as the offset is correct it shouldn't stick out. Plenty of the SEMA cars are that big or bigger. You might want to go with 285 because I was looking at the tire size calculator and to keep your speedo correct the 275 would be an odd size and I couldn't find any good manufacturers in 275 with the correct aspect ratio. 285's had plenty of manufactures to chose from with the correct aspect ratio to keep your speedo accurate.

 

Is this for an SN95 or an S197?

If it's an SN95, there might be rubbing issues on full a full turn with the 18's depending on the sidewall height, but the 03/04 cobras come with 275's (17) at all four corners

285's would be sweet. However, would I want to go to a larger rim? 18x9.5? Or will 18x9 do just fine?

Personally I'd do 18x9.5's with 285's, but that's me.

285/40's will generally fit 9's, 285/35's may be a bit big.

It will also depend on the manufacturer and the installer. All manufacturers give a wheel width that accompanies the tire. Some places won't install a tire if the wheel width is smaller than the manufacturers recomendation.

 

There are slight disadvantages. Lower MPG would be one.

 

Tirerack shows:
Front Optional 18" 255/45-18
Rear Optional 18" 285/40-18

While TireRack is conservative with their sizing, this indicates that 285 is probably too wide for the front.

You may want to work with a good local tire dealer who will let you try the 285's all around and to go down in size if necessary.

 

I'm really considering 255's all around with 18x9 Fanblades. 275's would have been very nice. Problem is, I'd have to go with aftermarket rims (to get the 9.5" width).

I guess it comes down to:

Go with Ford: 255 R18x9

Go with aftermarket: 275-285 R18x9.5 (though 285 R18x9.5 on the front seems a bit wide as M1 pointed out) Steeda is using that setup I believe though.

I don't really want to sacrifice performance for looks. So I'm looking for a good balance.

 

Here are a few. Again, the 285/35/18's on a 18x9 rim, with a 1" drop in the rear, 1-1/4" drop in the front (Roush Stage 2). At full wheel lock (parking lot manuvers, etc), I may get the slightest rubbing on the inner fender, but otherwise I have had no rubbing/clearance issues at all.

 

Again, if I can do this with a '96, you should have no problems with an '05 (at least I would think so)

 

I was reading about the New Porsche and Corvette I think in C&D 255 front 285 rears. THIs is from memory but you might want to check out how other cars are set up from the factory.

I would hope so, but remember, the steering on the 2005 allows for a smaller turning radius, based on a GREATER angle to which the steering can turn.

I think all bets are off until someone tries it. These tire and wheel combinations are too expensive (or at least too much of a pain to order, ship, try, return, order new, ship, try, etc.) to get wrong.

Best bet, as always, is use a friendly tire and wheel dealer that isn't going to complain about a little experimentation. At least that's what we'll have to do until a few people do it and report back here with their success stories.

 

I agree, I'll be getting rims/tires in the spring at the earliest so hopefully I'll hear more by then. And see some pics as well. Last thing I want is rubbing issues.

I think the orange pony is cool myself.I was thinking 275's on 18x9 all the way arond as well! I don't want to have worse MPG or mess with the speedo but, if 285x35x18 on 18x9 will work, go for more meat!!

Thanks! It may or may not be the lighting , but it is definitely one of those "love it or hate it" colors. Obviously I was a "love it" person otherwise I would have never sought out one of these (took me quite a few years to find one since they only made 253 of them in a convertible).
