Someone on this board (sorry i can't remember who, i'm thinking Jessica Rabbit) recommended that if we choose a Black Clearcoat mustang to get a couple of extra coats of clearcoat, but also said it would be expensive. I was wondering how expensive it would be, how many coats would be recommended, what type of clearcoat (brand wise), and should I have my dealer do it? Even though I have only just ordered the car, I was thinking about having this done as soon as my GT arrives. Thanks

It was me. I go through a custom shop for all my paint needs. They put 6 coats of clear over the finished paint job. It adds depth to metallic paints, as well as protect the color.

I would contact your local paint shop, and simply how much they would charge to put a coat of clearcoat on, how long each coat takes, and what they reccomend for a black car. I also reccomend going with a CUSTOM shop, that does custom paint. They would do a much better job than your dealership, IMO.

Hey Jessica... just curious who did your paint and what was your cost if you don't mind me asking... I live in LA so this might be something I want to do if the price isn't too high.

Thanks

Lanzini is the shop I work with, but they havent done mine yet. I am looking for a full custom color, with body kit. Lets just say its going to take some time to save up for that, LOL!!

They painted my louvers, did a GREAT job.

Call and talk to Mitch. He will be able to answer any questions you have.

I run a body shop and do custom painting and always get people asking this question. There is no real added advantage to just throwing on a couple (much less 6) coats of clear to your car. In fact adding 6 coats of clear....yes common in the custom paint industry to bury your underlying graphics is needed, but the mil thickness is WAY beyond paint companies recomendations. But in this industry it's the way it has to be done. Normal recomended dry mil thickness is anywhere between 2-3 mils. The underlying problems of too much clear would be anything from: More prone to chips, cloudiness in your clear, hazing in the clear, possible cracking of clear, etc. So IMO "more isn't always better"

I in NO WAY claim expertise in this field.. The only thing Lanzini told me was that when I get mine painted, they were going to do that... I am also going to have a custom metallic color. *I* came up with the idea of putting an extra clearcoat on my black car if I cant get it custom painted in the next year.

I am still debating on the whole claybar thing. I have had pros tell me not to, and have had pros tell me I must.

I would always reccommend talking to your local pro about these issues. They are going to know WAY more than I do, on ANYTHING!!
