Plasti-dip is like hard black rubber in a can- it's about $5 a can and you get it at the hardware store- ie Lowe's, Home Depot. It is easier to apply than paint, and has a nice matte finish. The real crazy thing is that once it's dry, if you want your wheels back the way they were, you can just peel it off.
Other than that, it holds up pretty well and can go through car washes, etc- it was a good solution for me, because I wanted to see how the black would look. I'm planning on getting rims in Feb or. March, and I'll want to sell my stock wheels.
I took each wheel off, scrubbed and cleaned them really well, dried. Flipped the wheel and use playing cards to mask the tire (also popped out my center caps) and sprayed a couple coats underneath. Flipped it back over and did about 3 coats on the rim side. I thought about masking a "lip" out, but my tape was really low tack and was giving me a hard time so I gave up on that.
After they were pretty dry, I put the wheels back on and let the paint cure for a day before I drove anywhere. Did not have to rebalance. From what I'm told it will last for months.
There's a ton of people doing this now- just search.

Looks really good. I'm tempted to try something like this with same intention you had. I think dark rims would go good with my alloy gray color and this could be my way of seeing how it looks.

It looks great! I did my grill and rear badge on my decklid in plasti dip and it turned out really nice! The wheels are gonna be done within the next week or so since I'm off from school! I'll put up pics when I'm done. Also getting my windows tinted and matte black 10in gt500 style lemans put on right after Christmas!

I masked them off. They didn't hold up too long because I had that left that lip clean which left the edge vulnerable. Once it starts peeling there's no turning back. I spray painted them now.
