Saw a post on another forum that caught my attention,black GT fender emblems. I've got a red/black theme going, so that's why it peaked my interest.
Didn't cost me a penny & only took about an hour. I pulled off my fender GT emblems,cleaned up,put on new 3M tape & sprayed w/Krylon satin black.I didn't sand them down in case I ever wanted chrome again, the paint should come off easily without damaging the chrome. I think it ties in well with my C-stripes.
This won't go well with alot of color combos, but besides my combo, I'd bet it would go well if anyone is doing a GO/black theme.
Before & after, sorry for the glare;

I actually found someone who said he could do black chrome emblems. I was about to have them done, but some other things came up instead, and I decided to keep the chrome.
I can't remember who the guy was now, except for the fact that he sells black chrome intake plenums for our car on ebay (that's how I found him)

Something else you might try is an old modelers trick to remove chrome.
1. Get suteable container to hold emblem(s) (cheapie foil baking pans work good for this)
2. Six pack of regular Coke.
3. Place emblem in pan and pour in enough Coke to completely immerse same. (some parts may need to be weighted down to prevent floating.)
4. Let stand over night, plating should be gone next day.
5. Wash part in warm soapy water and dish detergent (I use Dawn for this)
6. Rinse and dry completely.
7. Prime and paint as desired...
I was going to do this on my Stang's chrome grill logo, and shoot it in black making it a "Stealth Pony", before I had to give her up.
Regards,
Chuck

I am interested in making ones from steel. Then using the black chrome plating kit I have. Hopefully they will come out well. I don't know how the chrome is put on these emblems otherwise I would try to take it off. I don't want to destroy the emblems in the process.

In most cases Easy-off will remove chrome from plastic perfectly, and you don't have to waste a Coke. Just put them in a plastic bag and spray it in there, wear gloves though and use it outside unless you get the odorless version. Let it sit for 30-50 minutes or so. Takes it RIGHT off. This is used all the time in the modeling hobby to remove unwanted paint jobs completely without damaging the plastic.
